One on Friday - not sure of cause of death, but he was a good guy. Survived almost getting cut in half by a 5 ton truck several years ago and was a father to be/new father - not sure if the baby was born yet. Phil will be missed.

The other died Wednesday and hits a Lot harder. He was loved by EVERYONE. He was a world champion BJJ fighter several times over and was in Hawaii to train for the worlds in Australia when he died from a hit and run car accident. It was his trailblazing that led to the Indigenous studies degree program at UBC. He did a lot of good work on behalf of his people - training people for self defence and discipline, helping investigate the murdered and missing women’s cases etc. The gofundme to bring his body home to his ancestral burial grounds in Williams Lake, BC, and give some money to his surviving family had a target of $15K and was just shy of $20K this morning in less than 3 days. Everyone feels for his father, who we also know, as he lost his other 2 or 3 sons to suicide over the years. Benito Segura, a true warrior and champion, will be missed dearly by many.

Concise &.. autistic - thank you, I appreciate it.

Many of you may not have large social circles like this. So for the unenlightened, the beach community I’m a part of consists of hundreds of regulars who are truly like extended chosen family members, so when a prominent member is lost it really hits us all pretty hard. Depending on how close ppl were to him, it’s like losing a brother/father/uncle/best friend etc not just some random guy we knew in passing.

We’ve also lost at least 3 to fentanyl in the last couple years, and another to an accident when his RV fell on him while doing mechanical work, and a woman very recently to a massive stroke/heart attack etc.

But Benito will hit the regulars the hardest for sure.

Very sorry to hear of these losses, goldfish. May they rest in peace. May those left behind, find strength in each other, and in the memories you all shared.

I'm sorry for your losses.

If anything, as autistics, it probably hits us harder because we have to exert more effort to forge these connections. I'm happy to hear you still have a large community of beach friends to turn to you for support.

Thx all.

I inquired about the 2nd death. Apparently he had MS and some bad brain inflammation and was not doin well mentally this past year we haven’t seen him around & from what my friend gathers, it was likely suicide. :/ Sucks; but at least he’s not hurting anymore.

Ya, a little. The target was $15K. In 3 days it’s at over $23K. But there will be costs to bring him home & for a funeral.. and while the remainder will go to his family, life is very expensive here and that bit of money won’t last all that long. Longer than zero and certainly better than nothing, but it’s not as if this comes anywhere close to replacing the portion of his income he used to help support them.

I’ve never met his daughter or granddaughter or (ex) wife. But I do know his father and so as far as the living goes I feel most for him. IIRC, he had 3 other sons - and lost all of them to suicide. And now this. On top of that, his father is a direct survivor of the residential school system here in BC and so one can only imagine the trauma that stems from that. All things considered, he’s a pretty well adjusted man IMO. I do hope we see Ben Sr. still come down to the beach, and I hope others are with me in telling him that his money is no good there - if he wants to come for a few beers, come. (Benito usually brought or bought drinks etc for his dad; I don’t think he’s a wealthy man.) Hell, I’ll make a habit of leaving an extra 6 pack in the trunk of my car at all times just in case Ben comes down.

Thx again. None of us are going through this alone - all together, so at least there’s that.

Here’s the gofundme for a glimpse of who Benito was: https://www.gofundme.com/f/help-benitos ... hare-sheet

Went to a funeral for Phil yesterday. Glad I did - his family hardly saw him for 25 years and appreciated every story anyone had to share about him.

Turns out he’d lost his mind and was delusional thinking he was a Billionaire and was back home in Ontario for 6 months so his family could look after him. Spent some time in a hospital, had some brain scans that revealed ~100 white spots/lesions on the right side of his brain. He couldn’t cope with not being #1 and a high achiever/being a burden on his family.. so, he checked out his way.

99.999999999% sure this was Phil:

Almost poetic, really. He did things to the extreme in life & in death.

As long as there are no scheduling snafus, we’re going to the beach with his family tmw afternoon to spread his ashes. It’ll be nice for the ones who’ve never been there to see the place that kept Phil on the West coast vs going back to Onterrible; even when he was recovering from being crushed by a 5 ton truck - he told them, “You don’t understand. I will Not leave Wreck Beach!” And now he never will. 8)
