I just got upset on Facebook - by a bunch of strangers. All I did was comment on a video from a humourous page that I follow. The video was of a small child being knocked over by this moving thing that you're supposed to jump over, and she was struggling to get up. It looked rather intense for a small child, even though there was soft padding and everything.
So I just commented "a bit dangerous for a small child", and I got a load of very rude replies from other followers (who were random strangers), like "piss off" (with my name tagged) and "here we go" and "there's soft padding, dumbass" and all of that stuff. I know they were strangers but it still upset me the way they were rude. So I removed my comment, and I hope the nasty replies got removed with it.

I only had empathy, what's wrong with that? The little girl wasn't crying but she wasn't smiling either, she looked rather startled and was trying to get away from the moving arm but it kept knocking her down and squashing her.

I don't know how some people have the nerve to post such offensive posts about someone's harmless opinion. I don't like that behaviour. It's bullying.

From the sounds of it you hit them in the guilt... and they didn’t like it and hit back

There’s another thread about obnoxious online behaviour in general: I think the gist of my opinion there was that the anonymity of online communication means that every messed-up/nasty/resentful idiot with a phone line can take their everyday mask off and treat random strangers the way they secret want to treat their boss/colleagues/family/friends... 8O
I’m so glad I deleted my Facebook account a decade ago: if you can manage without it, I strongly recommend.

I don't usually have any problems on Facebook because all my Facebook friends are people I know and trust. But strangers are a different thing. I fear the judgement of strangers because they know that they can get away with bullying if they want to. Just because I didn't laugh like the rest of them at the video. I wasn't criticising, I was just giving an opinion; the equipment she was on was probably for older children or adults, and this little girl was too little to jump over the moving arms.
A couple of other posters posted a similar opinion to mine but they didn't get attacked for it.

It's just me innit. People always pick on me.

 Yeah, I do tend to rub some members of my family up the wrong way I guess :P

(Seriously now)
I have heard the phrase ‘pile on’ used with reference to this type of occurrence, think it’s the same thing as school bullying: they don’t go after all the kids they could go after, instead they adopt a ‘follow the leader’ approach. Once one attacks you, the others will all attack you too: even if there’s a thousand other available targets... a strength in numbers pack tactic, if you will 8O

I doubt very much there was any reason for you in particular being selected for this appalling treatment.
Unfortunately one other user having some random insecurity triggered by a turn of phrase or choice of a single word is enough to mark you as ‘target of the day’.

Cool that you enjoy using it with your trusted humans though :D
...
Maybe be more cautious about Facebook posting where malignant rando’s lurk, just to save yourself the hassle & stress  :?:

I don't know why but Facebook is like that sometimes. I'm on two groups, one is very respectful but the Aspie group I'm on isn't, people post stuff to deliberately trigger people and then have a go at them. :|

I broke down when I saw those mean comments, then deleted them. I do have a lot going on in my life at the moment so I'm rather emotionally fragile. I know I can't expect strangers to know that, but if they knew how much they'd upset me then maybe they would think twice before insulting another stranger's harmless comment on another video. We haven't all got thick skin.

Many of them probably would hold back if they knew...

Unfortunately I suspect that there is a sizeable minority of the online population who, without a face to see or voice to hear, are struggling with the concept that there are fellow minds at the other end of their online interactions, who can be massively affected by what they post, and how it is worded.
(I know I’ve been guilty of that  )

I’d advise keeping in mind that they know nothing about you, and aren’t thinking about you: just selfishly venting their own baggage in ignorance.
Because they do not, as yet, know any better.
Sad and frightening: but try to look on it as a symptom of their suffering... and not a comment on you yourself.

That looks more lecture-y than I intended... hope it helps though: once again I’m very sorry you’ve been on the receiving end of such beastly behaviour

To be honest, WP is the only place where I don't get belittled for expressing my feelings to strangers. But also troll behaviour is more under control here than it is on Facebook or other popular places like that.

Sweet Pea hugs.

There are a lot of sour grapes who are on social media. The sweet peas are here and we all love you.
