Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick implied late Monday that the senior population should be willing to sacrifice themselves so the United States can “get back to work” amid the coronavirus pandemic.
“Those of us who are 70 plus, we’ll take care of ourselves. But don’t sacrifice the country,” Patrick, who turns 70 next week, said on Fox News’ “Tucker Carlson Tonight.”

To quote Blazing Saddles, Dan Patrick is "the biggest as*hole in this state!"

We are going to hear more of this in the next few weeks from both sides. Trump is saying the economy has to be preserved because if it tanked to something even worse than the Great Depression, then people would die from poverty, etc. NY Governor Cuomo is apparently on board with the idea of preserving the economy as well, so it's not just a Republican ideal.
My hope is that the pendulum of caution and prudence doesn't swing the other way with society having a counter-mindset: "Yeah, this isolation stuff, scant shelves of products, etc sucks! Let's totally ignore this virus stuff and go on as if it's a non-issue!"
Interesting philosophy. Apparently, the economy is a being on its own right, an absolute value, accepting human sacrifices. Just like... socialism was presented to the generation of my parents. Funny parallel.

Are some people seriously so dumb that they don't realize that if thousands of people get sick and possibly die, it's going to cost the economy dearly as well?

At the moment an influential contingent of conservative leaders and commentators are advocating that we put a stop to measures meant to suppress the spread of COVID-19. Most of these measures fall under the category of social distancing, which has deeply impacted corporations by restricting us from our usual purchasing and employment movements. Combined with broader uncertainties brought by the pandemic, the Stock Market has likewise been tanking.
The developing cry to end social distancing predictably centers on reversing these obstacles. "Restart the economy" is becoming a refrain. President Trump has already tweeted in this direction: "WE CANNOT LET THE CURE BE WORSE THAN THE PROBLEM ITSELF." (2020-0322 at 0850 PM)
His top economic adviser, Larry Kudlow, has spelled-out things further: "The economic cost to individuals is just too great ... we’re going to have to make some difficult trade-offs." And one conservative talk radio host went still further, declaring that "If given the choice between dying and plunging the country I love into a Great Depression, I’d happily die." Better for a whole lot more people to suffer and die than for the free market to be stifled any further.
If the blood of human sacrifice was the seed of the free market, its god remains hungry as ever today. As historians ... have shown, wealthy followers of this god have been successfully proclaiming their gospel as the exclusive path to freedom for generations.
Their message now seems obvious and their god feels like the only option. These disciples are sick of losing wealth to social distancing, even if it saves lives. They want their economy of the pre-Coronavirus status quo back. It's the economy that made them rich.
^ Well, the one good thing to come out of this situation is it's exposing certain people (and political ideologies) for what they actually are.

But of course, the rich people could and would buy themselves the best treatment available if they got sick.
By the way, wasn't there a teenager without chronic conditions who died from corona in the US just yesterday? Or was it today?
Trump believes himself to be invincible. He looked at an eclipse, his doctors tell him what he wants to hear, he doesn’t do exercise because he thinks it will wear out his heart. He lives in a world where he makes up his own facts. He’s not scared of coronavirus.

Trump Is NOT A Church Go'er so He Doesn't Understand That if the 'Old People' Don't Show Up on April 12th to Easter Services, There Won't be Any Crowd; As That's Generally Speaking the Church Demographic Left; Same as the Demographic That Votes For Him; If They Do Show Up, He Still Loses in the Longer Run; Nope, Trump Ain't Got A Lick of Common Sense; BuT That's What Happens When Life IS A Huuuge Lie.

Likely, old people are using Medicare and Social Security.
So, we save money.
