Being a coin and banknote collector, I thought I would share this tidbit of information. The anti-counterfitting features in certain banknotes often contain metals and you know what that does in a microwave:

They also can burn.

How do you stand on broiling currency?

I prefer my currency sauteed for five minutes over a low flame.

I would rather it be steamed and then ironed to get rid of any wrinkles. At least for the US notes. Some of the world banknotes made of certain polymers might not fair as well as the linen ones in that process.

With currency being known as a germ carrier, this will probably bring about the end of cash for sure.

One of the scams going around in Afghanistan/Pakistan involves “officials” knocking on your door door telling you that your currency is contaminated with the virus. They then take the “contaminated” money and leave the former owner an promissory note. They then tell the former owners to go to a bank with the note to get new “clean” notes. When they go to the bank, they learn that they were robbed (not by the government).

Just put all of your savings into an account with Deutchebank.

That way you will KNOW that any money you withdraw will already have been....laundered! :D

Canadian dollar bills have little plastic holograms in them now, so they'd probably melt or shrivel up in the microwave.

Maybe spraying them with Lysol would help. But seriously, I have to use debit all the time now, so there's really no point in having real money anymore unless it's change for a vending machine, maybe. And they told us we should have real money stored somewhere in case an emergency prevents us from using ATMs or debit cards.

I was wrong on the area of the scam. I checked my source and had it mixed up with another story. It is happening in South Africa, not the Middle East. There are money scams going on in the Middle East, but not yet the same one that I mentioned above. My mistake.

Why does anyone want to microwave their money? You can't eat it.

How many people would fall for such an obvious scam?
