If an OP thinks their forum thread is going way off-topic or getting too hostile, but he thinks useful information is there too, he may not want to delete it, but he'd also want people to stop posting to it.

So there should be an option to lock our own threads that we create. That way, the posts that were already made to that thread get preserved, as well as the thread itself, but nobody can post new content to that thread.

I'm glad we have the ability to delete our own threads, but seriously, sometimes content on the thread is so worth preserving the OP may not want that deleted with the rest of the thread, so it would be quite nice to have an option to lock the thread too.

Also, in case we change our minds later, we should also be given the option to unlock the thread at anytime.

What do you all think of this feature suggestion?

I have never had a problem with asking a mod to lock a thread I created.
It happens quickly.
And threads have been unlocked, in the past.

I like the idea of being able to do it yourself if it is your thread,
But I would be surprised if it were possible.

Ambitious, but bloody unlikely.  The moderators have their own limitations, and the software that supports this website would need to be changed.

Also, what would prevent some political or religious nut-case from posting their screeds and then immediately locking the threads?

And, by the way, we do NOT have the ability to delete our own threads -- only our own posts, and only if no-one has posted anything afterward or some moderator has not locked the thread.

Bottom Line: While theoretically convenient (albeit currently impossible), it would give too much power to the average users, who would likely find some way to abuse that power.  So, if you want to have that much power, then I suggest you start a website of your own.

Good luck with that.
