I'm using the PM for the first time. Another user sent me a message. I read it and responded to it but my sent messages area is empty. My post is in the outbox. Have i done something wrong or have they just not responded to me yet?

Yep it stays in the Outbox until it is read & then it goes to Sent. This is a fairly common thing newer users are confused over. I think it would help if there were better terms/labels than Outbox & Sent.
