North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un has ordered pet dogs to be confiscated in the country’s capital, saying the pooches represent Western “decadence’’ — but their owners fear Fido is really headed for someone’s dinner table.

Kim issued the directive in July to round up the pets, claiming they were part of “a ‘tainted’ trend by bourgeois ideology,’’ a source told the English edition of Chosun Ilbo, a South Korean newspaper.

“Ordinary people raise pigs and livestock on their porches, but high-ranking officials and the wealthy own pet dogs, which stoked some resentment’’ among the lower classes, the source said.

“Authorities have identified households with pet dogs and are forcing them to give them up or forcefully confiscating them and putting them down.’’

But while the oppressive regime says the move is to clamp down on capitalist extravagance in Pyongyang, the dog owners are fearful that given North Korea’s food shortage — and propensity for eating dog meat — the directive has only come about to feed the masses.

The dog owners are “cursing Kim Jong Un behind his back,” but otherwise, their hands are tied, the source lamented.

Indeed, but let us hope we never end up like North Korea! Trump is an isolationist too and he loves smooching with dictators. :|

Is it morally wrong to attack another culture for wishing to internalise their love for canines?

I have nothing against cultures that eat dog meat, speaking as a meat lover myself who believes there is room for all God's creatures on the grill. But forcing people to eat their cherished pets is pretty cruel. But I suppose if people in North Korea are truly starving...

I'm just worried about Kim Jong-Un's sister taking over the country someday. She's an even bigger psychopath than her brother.

Not sure it was "forcing", being that it was stated it was considered a delicacy there, nor that the owners were the ones to be eating them...More likely the leaders were running low and wanted the "benefits" they feel entitled to through their acts of "serving the people".

Do you mean...cross the 38th Parallel with five columns of Armies like they did in 1950?

If the US returns to having conventional presidents then there is no way North Korea could invade South Korea, and restart the Korean War. Just like there is no way for the US could do a Bush-Cheney on North Korea either (ie invade their country just to do a regime change) because North Korea has its friends Russia and China right next door. The status quo of eternal stand-off would return.

But Trump is so hell bent on making America weak by destroying our alliances that anything could happen if he is re elected.

But even if this eternal standoff were to return it wouldnt really be eternal.

This confiscation of pet dogs means either (a) the dogs are consuming food needed for humans, or (b) the dogs themselves are needed AS food for humans, or (d) both.

Its one more symptom of the North Korean economy - and whole society- imploding.

North Korea isnt really much of threat to the US, nor even an immediate threat to South Korea. The Nork regime is a threat to its own people. Their society is headed for collapse. Millions of starving refugees will soon be flooding into both South Korea, and into China, when their nation collapses in a few years if trends continue. And thats what to worry about.

// ~~ feelings bs? sjw? \\

isn't that a place where people are starved, and now they're suddenly dog-owners as well?

there comes a lot of bs out of this regional hotspot of bs lately even more

doesn't it strangely ring the bell of feelings-rousing (with the drums of war softly in the back?) ?

To be fair, these dogs aren't likely to end up on their owners plates, but instead on the plates of people with higher status in the party.

It would break my heart if my government came and took my dog from me. He's part of the family. I think thats a common way to feel for pet owners, their animals are not just something that hangs around, bonds do get formed.

I feel bad for these people, this whole ordeal must be devestating to them.

Not really ... it's just another form of virtue signalling -- an American saying, "At least we're not like those dog-eaters!" is like a Jew or Muslim saying, "At least we're not like those pig-eaters!"

While I personally object to eating dog meat, I will not prevent someone else from exercising their right to do so...

... unless it's my dog.
