What's a good source to download instrument samples?

When it comes to music composing I want to download instrument samples, or purchase, them but instead of purchasing a costly package, where I wouldn't use most of them likely, is there a place where you can download the samples of an instrument individually?

Or is it better to just download a whole package, even if you won't end up using a lot of them? Plus a lot of sites do not give many samples to listen to, so how do you know which packages or samples are good and sound real, and not fake, like a lot do?
