"Staycation"
Does it annoy anyone else that 'staycation' has become the new way of saying 'going on holiday in your own country'?
I remember when the staycation stuff first appeared. It was in the 00s. It was all about staying in your own home and apreciating your home town & your home.
When I was growing up, I was quite old (about 10) before I went on a holiday outside of the country. My holidays to Butlins were still holidays, as was going to see my cousins in Aberdeen or going to other towns like Edinburgh. We got excited about them. They were our main holiday and they were enjoyable. A lot of these are tourist towns or specific holiday camps, designed to be enjoyed by tourists.
Seems snobby that people are saying 'I'm off on a staycation to Scarborough/Blackpool' etc when they live in some other town & plan to spend a couple of nights there. And on a pedantic level, it's not true. They're not staying anywhere, they're off somewhere else...
I think it wouldn't make sense to a lot of Americans. To a lot of Americans, going on vacation to Disney world or to Florida or Hawaii is absolutely a vacation and not staying home... ![]()

Is that what "staycation" means? I thought it meant taking a vacation in your own home. You're on vacation from work or school but you don't go anywhere at all. If it really means a vacation in your own country then all my vacations have been staycations. I just found the word itself annoying, but now I find people who think it's not a vacation unless you travel to a different country because you're rich and therefor superior.
I guess that's one "good" thing about coronavirus. It doesn't care if your rich or poor or in-between. No one can travel outside their country now.

Seems to be that post coronavirus it means staying in your own country rather than staying in your own home.
It annoys me that the meaning is shifting to that.
Sounds very entitled.
It's different to America cos trips to say the Canaries can be had for cheap (I get a sense that Americans being on holiday abroad is really expensive, probably cos of the size of America). But what does it say about our attitude to the environment? Or just to nice places in our own country? That we expect all holidays to be abroad... Mum genuinely couldn't afford to go to the Canaries/Spain etc when I was very young, I still loved my holidays.
Heck, you could be American and take a holiday in your own state. My parents had their honeymoon in the same county where they live, it was a holiday cos it was a week relaxing in a different town.

i suppose it depends on where one lives...
Within; and Sure on the Outside too...
Where i live (Real Paradise)
Has Always Been Staycation now...
Never Had anyone
Disagree Yet
Who Actually
Visits Paradise...
It's Worth noting this Summer Day
This Paradise isn't Crowded With People...
Just my 50 Year-Old Wife;
By the Way, Folks Age Slower
in Paradise too AFAIK at Least....
It's True; it's Worth Forgiving the
75 Percent of Folks ALL FOR the 'Orange King' living in this 'Staycation Heaven' too...
And Not Far From the Beach; my Home in the Forest; Here's 9 Seconds of 'God' in my Backyard too...
The Real Estate Agent in 1993 Tried to Shame Us into Staycationing in Huge Homes with No Forest...
i said yes, to Heaven Staycation at Home in a place All Paid off; it's Free to visit the Beach; just a little bit of Gas...
Barrier Islands
Are Named that
For a Reason anyway;
Barriers to Hurricanes
As that's why there are few Dunes left...
Anyway; it's amazing to me that folks
Down Here, don't name the Forest and Beach Heaven and God; i sure do....
Sure Beats
The 'Orange
King' at His Golf
Course a bit Further South...
Really though, it depends on What Folks Value;
i really wouldn't Trade this Modest Home in the Forest
For my Rich Uncle's Multi-Million Dollar Home on the Shalimar Bay Pointe Emerald Coast...
This Forest Really Breathes Green; It's Just All Alive; it's Like there is No 'Human News' Back Here..![]()
It doesn't even need any Words; the Wild Life Says it all; Just Free; Just Free; What The Mocking Bird Sings...

Here staycation seems to mean that you go on a vacation outside of your home, but you go somewhere very close, like somewhere in your own town or the next town over. Nothing wrong with it otherwise, but I can't understand why someone would book a hotel room from the next town if they could easily go home for the night. Seems like a waste of money to me.
I always wanted to do that as a kid.
Of course, for a kid, holidays don't cost money so it makes sense
Mum was very honest with me about 'don't even think about it'
I still live at home but if we go on holiday, I pay for my own hotel room. So I'm with her now - don't even think about it
I also wanted to go for a time pretending we didn't know anyone we bumped into. She didn't like that idea either

I think I first heard the word about ten years ago, and have only ever come across it in the sense of taking a holiday in the UK, as opposed to abroad. Never heard it used to mean 'staying at home'.
Maybe I need to get out more, LOL.

At least it's not a 'oh no we should actually be responsible and not spread the virus around the world' change of meaning then
I still think it's pretty spoilt to not consider a holiday in the UK as a holiday though.
