Goals can be the manifestation of desires. I would like to do this or have this. It is a desire. I would like to take a ride on a coal fired locomotive on a dark night in the countryside with the hot ashes rising from the train smokestacks, trailing the train like a million fireflies in the night's sky. It is a desire. Then it becomes a goal.
The goal fractures into a maze of smaller steps. Accomplishing these smaller steps produces the final goal and satisfies the desire.
I read a book once called "From the Ground Up" by John Cole and Charles Wing. It was published in 1976 so it is probably out of print. The book was about people building their own homes. It had two interesting concepts:
1. For over 5,000 years, individual built their own homes. It wasn't until the Industrial Revolution that mankind lost the art of homebuilding. We became convinced the we needed a host of specialist to construct a home, architects, contractors, carpenter, plumbers, electricians, masons, glaziers, roofers, and backhoe operators. But even in today's world, man still has the ability to build their own homes.
2. When you gather the materials to construct a home together it can be overwhelming. Thousands of nails, a stack of plywood 10 feet high, thousands of 2x4's etc. It is easy to get completely overwhelmed and give up at this point. But focus on one individual nail. Drive in the first nail and then the next. Block off all the other nails from you mind. Focus on one single nail and drive it into the first board. This is because a house is built one nail at a time.
As a result of reading the book, I and my wife built our own home from the ground up. It took several years to complete. But our home is more than just a mere dwelling place, it is almost magical. It is the embodiment of a dream.
So MountainGoat do you have any dreams left or have you used up your very last one. And if you have a dream, then pursue it. One of the greatest most satisfying aspects of life is ADVENTURE. And chasing your dreams will provide you with a life of adventure.
