Private messaging question
Hi, I was wondering if there's a way to shut off personal messages for certain people and not everyone? In my first week I received a message from a member I don't know on behalf of another another member I barely know, being really dramatic. It made me uncomfortable and the whole thing seems like a lot of pressure, almost like middle school. I don't want to shut off my whole message system or I will never make proper friends here.
Thank you!
I'm not sure. I know that Fnord has claimed he has a system in place so he can block PM's from specific members (autodelete?), but I'm not sure that is a normal website function. I've dug around the settings and adding certain members as 'Foes' does not block PM's for some reason.

If you go to your profile page you'll see under your avatar the words "add friend" on the left and "add foe" on the right. If there are people who annoy you, you can click on "add foe" option which means PMs to them may be blocked. That's the only method I'm aware of, but I haven't used it personally.
I hope you'll make proper friends here and enjoy your experience here.

There is a solution. One that you can implement yourself without a moderator's help. Just follow the procedure below.
1. Access your PM page.
2. Select "Rules, folders & settings" under "Options" on the left of the page.
3. Select "Sender" under "Add New Rule".
4. Click "Next".
5. Select "is" under "Sender".
6. Click "Next".
7. Type the name of the sender whose PMs you wish to block under "Sender is".
8. Click "Next".
9. Select "Delete message" under "Sender is [sender's name]".
10. Click "Add rule".
That's it, you are done! Now when that member tries to PM you, his or her PM to you will be deleted before you even see it.
I've posted this because other members of WP have told me they have been receiving annoying PMs after they've told the sender to stop, and even after they've reported the annoying PMs (and their equally annoying senders) to the moderators.
Now, we all know how busy the moderators are with more important matters, so it may be a better idea to deal with this matter ourselves -- it is certainly easy enough to do!

Correction: it doesn't work by clicking your own profile - you click on the profile of the person you wish to add friend or foe. Sorry about that!!

Unless the official wording is wrong?
So that function works if you hit add foe from the persons profile?
Unless the official wording is wrong?
Adding someone to your Foe list only stops you seeing your foes reply in the "Topic Review -" while you are typing a post.

^It does seem odd that the friend/foe system still allows PMs from people selected as "foes". Seems a pointless and awkward system that!
Maybe that's an Admin issue that Alex or Cornflake can take a look at.
There have been cases where annoying PMs were reported and I had to tell a user not to contact person "x" anymore as they felt uncomfortable.

Thanks to everyone who answered me. I'll try the longer method that was explained if I ever need it but I hope not to. Sorry if my post in that mod area seemed to escalate a drama that I'm no part of. I don't do drama and I'm still finding my way around by getting a sense of people and learning how the features work. It would be great to get to know some people better as time goes on. Thank you all again.

Very odd that such an action isn't included as a natural consequence of the "Foes" handling - if you've decided to block seeing forum posts for a user it seems unlikely you'd be Ok with PMs from them...
The method suggested by (ahem) "a wise elder" above seems a reasonable work-around though.
(Oops, sorry - late to the party again
