Pope calls for civil unions for same-sex couples, in major departure from Vatican doctrine

If he insists that civilly married couples be allowed to partake in Holy Communion, that will be better.

I wonder if he's citing the Bible to make his argument.

My guess is that he changed his mind because being against same-sex marriage made him look like a tyrant in charge of a sexist and xenophobic organization that focuses on judging people who are merely different, calling them 'sinners', and driving them out of his organization.  Then he saw all the empty pews and collection plates.

By the rules about Holy Commmunion, it would be forbidden for someone living in a heterosexual union other than a Catholic marriage, right?
I wonder what is his opinion on Holy Communion for people in gay unions.

I believe so, I am not Catholic but I am Orthodox, and it varies from parish to parish who is allowed to receive communion.

In the church I attend, all are welcome to partake of Communion.  No one has to declare their heterosexuality (or anything else) to receive Communion.
