Are you objecting to the accidental suicide itself or to the inclusion of what you believe to be an irrelevant event in the movie?
It was necessary to show the meaninglessness of that character's ambitions, the futility of trying to hold on to one's dreams in that social environment, and the way that the actions of the few have an impact on the lives of the many.
I know this is deep thinking, but try not to obsess over it.
