Another beach friend. He was a bit of a troubled soul, but still a good guy at heart. Young - under 30 I think. Struggled with drug addiction, left a bad relationship in Calgary, headed West, discovered our beach and decided not to leave - literally. He’s been living in the forest at the beach for months (a few guys do it, and others have over the years.) & quickly became one of the staple characters. A couple of the older guys gave him some cash work to do to survive, looked out for him. He’d sometimes get carried away ranting about something or nothing, but was generally an entertaining addition to the fire. He was super stoked to have a crab trap to try to catch dinner with, too.

Cause of death = OD. Not sure if he slipped off the wagon and did something hard and too much of it, or got a fentanyl contaminated batch of something ? Or if it was more of a simpler case of too much to drink & passing out/vomiting/choking. In any event, still sad.

7 friends and family died last year - none from drugs or covid. 3 so far this year; 2 elderly relatives I didn’t really know from covid a couple days ago, and now Colby who was more of an acquaintance than close friend, but still. Wtf? Enough with people dying already ffs lol like f**k off with that s**t.

Edit:

Just got word that there were regulars there at the fire when he passed. He went to sleep on the sand by the fire, as he often naps there before heading back to his camp, and no one knew he had passed - I guess they realized when they couldn’t wake him.

On the bright side, there’s no more beautiful place to die. At least he made it to the beach & will forever be there. 8)

Edit: I would have been there, too.. but decided to work late and then by the time I was ready to leave I was too tired to bother going down to the beach after midnight. In a way I’m glad I wasn’t there as I haven’t bothered to carry a full bag down with me lately so my naloxone kit would have been in the trunk of my car 480 stairs away, which could have created a guilty-stress situation IF he was discovered in time but we didn’t have what we needed right then and there.

Sorry to hear about the passing of your friend. I hope that he goes on to better things / a better place.
OD - sure, one of the most tragic ailments of modern times.
OD's can really mess up close ones, whether family of friends, as such deaths are much more shocking and illogical to the subconscious mind.

My only and older brother died of a fentanyl OD about 14 years ago.
I am 3 years younger than him and grew up in a close family unit.
The grief really hit my family and i really hard.

For a time, i even cried in my sleep.

I still have dreams with my brother in, as if he is still alive or my heart and subconscious mind wants him to be.
But this post isn't about me.

Sorry for your friend. Hope his soul rests in peace or moves on to better things (better next incarnation, uniting with the great soul / universe / God / heaven).

Celebrate his life!

Good post, not bothered at all about you mentioning your own experience with fent deaths. At least 3 others from the beach have died from fent in the last few years. I attended one funeral with a couple hundred ppl. Another one, I was working and had only met her once or twice - but she was so popular in the music festival scene that they had to book The Croatian Culturally Centre for her 900 person funeral.

But yeah, he’s off to his version of a better place for sure. 8)

Lol highly unlikely.

He was probably hammered drunk, had been smoking weed all day and night, probably on acid and or mushrooms.. and Might have taken something on the harder side if it ended up being a fent death. But even if it was just his regular mix of soft drugs & psychedelics; I guarantee he was feeling No Pain. 8)

Yeah, there’s been at least 8 or 9 that I knew and then probably several others that I didn’t know - especially elderly people that didn’t make it down to the beach anymore so I never met them but others knew them.

When there’s a beach community of thousands of people, some are gonna die every now and then. It’s not like it’s just a few dozen beach bums. Busy Summer days see several thousand people on the main beach, and the busiest days maybe 10,000-12,000+. There are thousands of regulars and at least hundreds of super regulars.
