New York Magazine

Quote:
Last week, actors Daniel Dae Kim and Daniel Wu announced that they were offering a $25,000 reward to anyone who could help identify the person who was caught on camera shoving a 91-year-old man in Oakland’s Chinatown.

The skyrocketing number of hate crimes against Asian Americans continues to grow, despite our repeated pleas for help,” Kim wrote. “The crimes ignored and even excused. Remember Vincent Chin.”

Vincent Chin was a major figure in the Asian American rights movement. In 1982, the 27-year-old Chinese American man was killed in a hate crime by two white autoworkers. “It’s because of you little m—f—s that we’re out of work,” one of the attackers allegedly said. After his death, Chin’s killers, Ronald Ebens and Michael Nitz, pleaded guilty to manslaughter and were sentenced to three years probation and a $3,000 fine. Neither spent a day in jail. The verdict sparked national outrage.

Now, nearly 40 years after Chin’s death, hate crimes against Asian Americans are on the rise in the U.S. As the Queens Chronicle noted back in September, NYPD date showed that there has been a 1,900 percent increase anti-Asian hate crimes in New York City in the past year — there were 20 incidents in the first half of 2020 alone, compared to one in the whole of 2019. An August 2020 UN report also found that there were more than 1,800 racist incidents against Asian-Americans in the United States over an eight-week period from March to May 2020.

And the violence has continued into 2021. As Amanda Nguyễn, the civil-rights activist and co-founder of Rise, a sexual-assault survivor advocacy organization, noted in an Instagram video over the weekend, the past few weeks alone have seen several violent attacks on Asian Americans across the country:

“This may be the first time you are hearing about this violence if you are not following Asian American news because the mainstream media does not spotlight our stories,” Nguyễn wrote in the caption alongside her video. “Racism kills.”

Many blame the Trump administration for inciting this violence

Manjusha Kulkarni, executive director of the Asian Pacific Policy and Planning Council said: “Our data and evidence of the real-life stories confirm that Asian Americans are facing increasing racist and xenophobic attacks, catalyzed by rhetoric from the president and other government leadership.”

The Biden administration has begun to take steps to attempt to reverse the hateful legacy of its predecessor. In January, the president signed an executive order denouncing the discrimination that has been directed at the Asian American and Pacific Islander communities during the pandemic.

I hope this dies down soon. Of course Trump had something to do with it.

He had everything to do with it, from accusing the Chinese government of creating the Covid-19 virus as a bioweapon, to labelling it as the "Chinese Flu" or "Wuhan Flu" in his speeches.

Sadly, to many racist minds, people from China, Japan, and Korea are now all the same and all to blame for everything that is wrong right now -- the pandemic, unemployment, Trump losing the election, et cetera.

Trump? The Chinese government? I hate them both.

I really wish Trump and the Chinese Communist Party could annihilate each other or at least already annihilated each other while Trump was still president. That will make the world a much better place.

This is where the whole cult of Trump and cult of anti-Trump come in. Get out of the cultist mindset.

Have you actually fact-checked any of these hate crimes against Asians? You're always going on about fact-checking. I doubt most of the perpetrators of these crimes have any love for Trump or any specific COVID-related conspiracy agenda for their attacks.

Some of these crimes might not even specifically have to do with the fact that the victim is Asian, per se. It's just that between defunding the police and cities becoming ghost towns because of never-ending lockdown, the crazies are more emboldened. In the Chinatown districts, the victims are statistically more likely to be Oriental, but their race might not be the motive for the crimes.

Wasn't an old Asian man pushed onto the subway in the Bronx not too long ago? The perpetrator was a schizophrenic black man. Don't think Trump was a factor.

I do think age is a factor. The elderly are easier prey for the loonies.

But, again, it's all Trump-Trump-Trump with you people. Self-proclaimed fact-checkers.

Funny ... the same could have been said about all "you people" back when Trump was still President.

But he is not President anymore, is he?

That's just it, man. I'm not one of those people. I'm critical of both sides. I don't deny that Trump was a divisive character and, yes, some anti-Asian sentiment can be linked to him and his rhetoric.

What I am saying is I'm equally critical of the go-to anti-Trump crowd for blaming anything and everything on one boogeyman. In a lot of these attacks on Asians, especially in Oakland, CA, it seems very unlikely that Trump and politics were a factor in the crime.

A partisan mindset causes problems, yes.

Most people jump to conclusions.
It gives a good indication of the mindset of the person doing the 'jumping', though.
I fight the temptation.

We seem to see things the same way.

I am not in the dead middle of the political spectrum, obviously, but being objective and having an open mind is important to me also.

I see myself as a right-leaning centrist.
I am definitely not purely right-leaning.

What world do you live in? :?

trump spent the better part of a year repeatedly blaming China for bringing "this plague," the China-virus, the Wuhan-virus, the Kung-flu etc etc & making his statements in an accusatory/derogatory way and tone. 100% trump has had an influence on the rise in anti-Asian hate crimes.

Yes.
Only Trump talked that way. [sarcasm]

To me, there is little doubt where the epicentre of the virus was, but you don't blame the ordinary person in that country. You blame the system that allowed it to happen, hid it from the world, and exported the problem while hoarding PPE before the Truth came out.

I don't like Trump, hope I don't see him again, btw.

Money is likely a huge motive.

The motives of robberies are typically money; they're not likely hate crimes at all. Totally separate crimes, dude.. apples to oranges compared to an uptick in hate crimes.
