Google "Going Off the Grid"; but ignore the inevitable Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube articles.

Living in the wilderness?

or

A completely self-sufficient house?

Anything that is done, is possible to do. People do escape the rat race. Indeed, google 'Ben Fogle New Lives In The Wild'. It's a documentary series, multiple seasons, where Ben travels the world meeting people who have done that. From floating houses in Canada, to missionaries in Mongolia, to hermits on deserted islands in Australia, to ex-businessmen living in remote swamps in Florida...

U could google the FIRE movement, start a business, invent something, sell something like a company. and start earning passive income or start by putting 30 percent of your gross income into a index fund as a young person and retire at 67.I escaped the rat race. But really only one percent of the population escapes the rat race before the age of 50.

If you have enough resources, skills are not even necessary. 1%, kinda bleak odds. Life is hard. There is no escape but death.

Not everyone is Bear Grylls though? Living off the grid "comfortably" is actually quite expensive.

I stay out of the "rat race," while being within the "rat race."

Living "off the grid" is much harder these days than it was in Thoreau's time.

One can live within the civilization while having their own goals and values, and refusing to compare themself to others all the time.

Alternatively, you can finish the rat race. I was unhappy during a lot of my working life but I kept working toward retirement...in my case at age 56.

If you can continue enduring the rat race long enough, and plan appropriately, you might be able to finish the rat race, too.

Retirement is really nice.

Agrees with cyberdad about expensive offgrid living ,have priced solar panels many times over the years. Hopefully a well would be a good idea.
Although the price came down alittle over the years . They are quite expensive .
And having skills to maintain the equipment . Is helpful . The initial setup seems the worst of the cost. Place where i was trying to do this was ideal . Then a rather dishonest family , especially the head of the family . Moved in next door to this 12 acres of desert . and had his extended family buy land all around Our property . After we had invested everything into this property And was still investing
20 years later we find that this illiterate family head. Had ingraciated hisself and his wife to the local sheriffs
good graces.
while his grandsons looted the local people houses . When they were away . Operating out of this same families properties . Our attempts to notify the local Sheriffs .went invane. Even got us rebuffed and came under harrassment from the Sheriffs .
Eventually had to give up , abandon the property after the Sheriffs started fabricating situations to
engage us legally by any means . Eventually my husband/ life mate lost his life in this situation by homicide.
Even after we agreed to leave .

Not the recommended exit!

And I am very sorry to hear about all of that horribleness.

And remind me not to move there!
