I feel like the "study group" idea is pretty darn good.

If you don't mind me asking, what are you seeking to get your degree in?

Curious: Is "fresher" used a lot more than it used to be used? We, in the US, have had "freshman" since at least the 19th century.

I gave actual advice for making friends in uni rather than telling her to not even bother trying. She didn't ask "How do I become more successful in uni?" nor did she ask if we agreed with her decision to pursue friendships whilst in uni.

It is pretty early in the term anyway.

I hope you have some luck. :) Good luck in both your friendships and your classes!

Art and design!
I’m British, freshman isn’t used here, instead everyone calls it fresher. :D

I think Flown has given some good advice.

I was not great at making friends in college, either, but I'm strongly introverted so it did not bother me much. I got along best with classmates and also folk with the same major who were doing comparably well as I. My first priority was getting the degree (which required getting the grades) and the folk who I spent the most time with were people on the same trajectory as me.

Well, I do hope that she achieves whatever goals she has set for herself, even if it means neglecting her education.

You will find lots of "weird," "odd," "eccentric," etc. in your field.

You will have pretentious folks, too.

But I feel like you will make friends, eventually.

Get pissed, take drugs. It didn't really help me make 'friends' but at least I felt less alienated from other people

My advice is stay drug free and do not drink alcohol.

Some universitys have quite a problem with alcohol and even drug abuse. I think these things mess people up.

My advice is make a point of going along to all teaching events, you might meet people you get on at lectures, in lab classes or tutorials.

Also join a club which is about something which interests you,

As an academic I know something, the ideal student is one who studies hard and also enjoys their time at university.

There is a saying

"All work and no play makes jack a dull boy"

I reply to this with

"All play and no work makes jack fail his exams"

What you need to do is to strike a healthy balance between work and play while you are at university.

Is it free? Otherwise, is it worth the cost?

Doing better in it you might learn more, be better prepared for the next academic step, have a better-looking transcript (possibly useful for improving academic or career options), and look more like someone worth making friends with.

But, maybe you're looking only for friends who do poorly even in a free, independent, part-time course?

LOL....isn't it better that people care at least a little, rather than not care at all?

It depends on the subject of concern.
