I went to a funeral service on Sunday. The woman who died had been a Beatles fan since the time when they began to grow famous.

So two of the songs in the funeral, played on a pipe organ, and sang by those of us in attendance were "Let It Be" and "Here Comes the Sun".

I had never considered anything but religious songs for a funeral. If it wasn't in the hymnal, I assumed it would be out of the question. I let it be known years ago that when I die, I'd like them to play "Battle Hymn of the Republic" at my funeral.

I got to thinking about what non-religious songs might work at mine.

Obviously, it should begin with Alice Cooper's "School's Out For Summer".

Then, Marty Robbins with "Ghost Riders in the Sky". (I'd love to include Marty Robbins song "El Paso", but it wouldn't really fit.)

And the final song should be Roy Rogers and the Sons of the Pioneers "Happy Trails to You".

If you were to pass away, what songs would you prefer at your service?

well I wont be around for it so technically I wouldn't care what they play as I'll be dead and unaware. But if they really wanted to honor me they'd play a lot of satanic metal music. Maybe some Ghost, Behemoth and Dimmu Borgir and my death outfit would be one of my favorite metal shirts...but I wouldn't want to be buried like the whole coffin thing, I'd rather donate my body to science or do the thing where you can become basically nutrients for a tree so in a way you become a tree.

Or if it was more archaic times just have my body left out for the vultures and raptors.

"Evening Falls"
by Nick Ryan, Eith Ni-bhraonain, Roma Shane Ryan (1988)

When the evening falls
And the daylight is fading
From within me calls
Could it be I am sleeping?
For a moment I stray
Then it holds me completely
Close to home, I cannot say
Close to home, feeling so far away

As I walk the room, there before me a shadow
From another world, where no other can follow
Carry me to my own, to where I can cross over
Close to home, I cannot say
Close to home, feeling so far away

Forever searching, never right
I am lost in oceans of night
Forever hoping I can find memories
Those memories I left behind

Even though I leave, will I go on believing?
That this time is real, am I lost in this feeling?
Like a child passing through
Never knowing the reason
I am home, I know the way
I am home, feeling oh, so far away

Once my worthless corpse drops dead, I have zero preferences over funeral songs. Also I don't prefer burial or cremation. Literally over my dead body. I won't have to listen to the music anyways because I will have been dead

I really don't want to have a funeral (I want a natural burial with no embalming fluids, etc. Preferably a mushroom burial suit), but I probably don't get much of a choice. Funerals are for the living I suppose.

Maybe because it's almost Halloween, the 1st song I thought of is the Ramones song, Pet Sematary
I don't wanna be buried in a pet cemetery
I don't want to live my life again

& maybe because I'm feeling very misanthropic these days, the 2nd song I thought of is the GWAR song, F#ck This Place

If I die now before my parents or siblings then I want them to remember me when I was young dude skateboarding on the main road getting horned at by traffic

If I die as an old man then this is the tune I want whoever is around to play
