How should mods encourage members to modify their behavior without such encouragement being perceived as a threat? I feel that you have a narrow view that is shared by a vocal minority. I'd like to hear from some other members on this, in addition to you.

Unfortunately, it is a difficult issue.
Deletions is one way. As are edits.

But, only to be used in the most egregious
of cases. You know that I support the idea
of making it clear WHY something was removed
or edited, so as to allow the entire membership
to learn from errors.

Otherwise, the only warnings should probably
be just a matter of indicating that "hey, you are
just about to be banned. What you are doing is
SO unacceptable that this is effectively your last
chance." In which case it IS a threat, but a valid
one.

I too hope that others comment, but your wishes to
hear from them will not serve as a tool to silence me.

You got a problem with duck spam?

It is an effective way of ending debate. :P

I have a problem with ducks at the moment. Duck spam (what's wrong with duck soup?) just pisses me off. They crap around my pool, and I don't have any SAMs to deter them with.
