Do we prefer to Shout Down rather than Listen and Debate ?

I am very aware of the woke and cancel culture, but I seem to think some people will take offence over things which for example, are true and have all the evidence to back it up their existence or become offended if phrases or words such as Mankind because it sounds like its excluding women and trans-gender people. I just seems like some freedom-loving ordinary people are becoming almost like dictators using freedom of speech in a democracy to their own advantage to shut down debate and not willing to listen both in real life or online. I remember the gay activist Peter Tatchell saying that he even though he disagrees with people who have objectionable and sometimes very abhorrent views about gay people, trans-gender people, people of other races etc, he defends their right to express them as long as they are not inciting violence.
