What kind of controller are you having trouble with?
I don't have Q3A installed ATM, but as long as Windows recognizes it, the game should be able to as well.

I'm pretty sure it doesn't. It would say on the steam page if it did. I'll run for the first time just to be completely sure.

Okay so it does, but it's kind of awkward using the right thumbstick to navigate and confirm with the right trigger in the menus. The only thing that's missing is the soundtrack.

I might buy a more flexible stick tomorrow. Mine's an 85 but I'd like to try a 75.

There are two SCS DLCs I'm considering. But paying a total of nearly $45 AUD for them (Oklahoma for ATS, and West Balkans for ETS2) is a little beyond what I'm willing to pay. West Balkans doesn't look to be anything near the size of their previous DLC (Iberia). So I'm wondering if there is anything whatever which makes up for it a little.

I would pay about $30 AUD (which is probably about 5-7 Euros, depending on today's currency exchange rate). But no more.

Does it count if I grab the free Epic Games once in a while?
Hasn't been anything terribly interesting lately, but I still grab most of them, "just in case".

Yeah, Steam's "controller support" thing is for something else...has to do with Microsoft's attempted XBox controller monopoly.
I don't have any evidence, but I suspect MS gives kickbacks if your game supports XBox controllers but not any other brands/protocols. And/or they are trying to nip it in the bud by killing it in the SDKs themselves.

Oh?
Is this Q3A, or Quake Live?
I just installed Q3A from disc the other night, and the music is working fine. It's all in: ./[gamedir]/baseq3/pak*.pk3/music/*.wav
Q1 and 2, the music was Redbook audio, so it was more work to include in the digital downloads.

I've never played Q3TA or QL before, so I don't know about those.

It's Quake 3 Arena.
Before Quake 1 & 2 were remastered, their soundtracks were missing as well. It's only the Steam versions though.

That's what I said ;)
Quake 1 and 2, the soundtracks were Redbook audio, so it's understandable why they went absent, but I have no idea why the music would be missing in Q3A. Unless there was some legal dispute.

I just did a quick search and it sounds like the music is still there.

When I booted it up to test the controller settings, I was sure I didn't hear any menu music whatsoever. I'll run it again.

No music. I even started a short single player session. No music in the battles either.

Yeah, I don't think there's any menu music.
Should be "music" in the maps. A lot of it sounds more like ambient sounds than actual music, but if you mute the volume, you'll definitely notice it's gone.

No, Quake 3's soundtrack is more industrial. You're thinking of Quake 1. As I said before, the soundtrack is not there. I was playing the tutorial match and heard nothing.

No "thinking"; I literally opened up the game, loaded a map, and listened to the music.

I don't think the tutorial map has music, either. Try a different map.
For reference, I checked q3dm1 and q3dm2 and they both had music.

If there's still no music, check .\[gamedir]\baseq3\pak0.pk3 and make sure there's a "music" folder with WAV files inside.
And if there's still no music, maybe there's a cvar that has it disabled or something.
You can check q3config.cfg and see if anything like that is set. Or maybe just delete the CFG file and it should reset your config to defaults.

I don't have anything that can open a pk3 file and I'm not willing to spend money on anything that can. I opened cfg and went through the list. Everything is normal there. Next I tried the map cheat for q3dm1. Wow, thank you. There is music. Yeah, some tracks are ambient but there are some industrial metal sounding ones too.
