While I understand the distain for Trump, I can't help but feel the quality of PPR has gone downhill as a result of perhaps (at least in my eyes) a somewhat excessive fixation on Trump. He's no longer president and hasn't been for some time.

What gives?

To revisit a well-know bit of trollery . . . “What about Hillary?”. It is not just Trump who is the object of people’s attention; but it is Trump whose clown act seems to be on-going.

As for the topic, the current fixation on Trump seems to have started during the 2015 campaign and election, when a few (now-former) members expressed their adulation of all things Trumpish. Hardly any thread seemed safe from posts of “TRUMP! TRUMP! TRUMP!” and other such nonsense.

The current fixation is both backlash from that era, and reactions to Trump’s continued buffoonery ever since.

Where did you get the silly misguided idea that "he's no longer president"?

According to Trump he still IS president!

Are you doubting the word of Trump??????

But seriously...that in a nutshell IS 'what gives'.

You either are a member of the MAGA cult, and therefore share in his delusion/lie that he is still POTUS, and that the election was stolen (in which case him still being POTUS makes him still important).

OR...you dont share in the delusion. In which case youre aware that he is first POTUS in American history to NOT concede, and not participate in the peaceful transfer of power, which means that you are aware that his unprecedented behavior is a threat to the rule of law and to democracy. WHICH...ALSO makes him all too important.

Either way he is still important.

He very much controls the Republican Party and is considered the front runner for that Party's nomination.

He is the subject of multiple criminal investigations which is unprecedented for a former President.

Reasonable people deep down are afraid that someday his influence on American politics will turn us into a dictatorship.

We have to closely monitor some person who wants to rule undemocratically (Trump)

How would someone feel if, say, Boris Johnson inspired a bunch of people to storm the Parliament chamber in order to overturn the results of a Parliamentary election?

You know? I have to hand it to Boris. Despite the scandals and mistakes he made I don't believe he was anywhere near as bad as Trump. I believe he had genuinely good intentions for his country and the comparison to Trump was a bit unfair.

I mean not only did he step down and accept that the people did not want him anymore, but I remembet back when he opened the UK's borders up to refugees fleeing from Hong Kong after the CCP took the city back. I can't picture Trump doing either of those things!

He honestly reminds me more of a British Richard Nixon than Donald Trump so I can muster some sympathy for him even though he deserved to be booted out.

He's still daily headline news due to his massive crime spree as president & post election loser and all the crap that comes along with his cult doing trump cult things. If he'd just disappeared into obscurity like most other ex presidents, then there wouldn't be daily headlines nor thread discussions about him. But his ego keeps him trying to have the spotlight shone on him, sooooo, here we are in this loop of trump saying and doing absurd things, often criminal things, making headlines and then remaining the topic of discussion. Eventually he'll go to jail and/or die and it'll finally be over and we can move on to discussing anything else more important.

I'd like to believe that, i really would. But it would not surprise me in the least if long after he is dead we have giant Mao-sized portraits of Trump hanging over the same Capitol building his cult attacked on Jan 6th.

He won't be around to newsjack headlines and get attention for himself. He'll fade away like everyone else. He can already see that himself with his 'truth sensial,' posts getting a few views compared to the attention he used to get on twitter. Even trump knows he's fading away into irrelevance - that's why he keeps up with saying ever increasingly absurd things.. if he doesn't, he won't get the attention he craves.

Once he's in jail or dead, sure, there will be some cult members that view him as a martyr.. but without trumplestiltskin around to constantly remind them about him and his self purported relevance, everyone will just slowly begin to forget about him and move on. Media will find someone or something else to sensationalize for profits, and if not, maybe they'll report on something actually important or valuable to peoples' lives for a change.

And if there isn't anyone particularly sensational to turn into profits, they'll just turn to climate change fear porn to keep people on the edge of their seats.

Yes, man made climate change is very real - but they're still going to milk it for all it's worth when it comes to freaking people out for profit. People would be much better off turning off the TV and going outside to plant trees. Two birds, one stone.

I actually agree, I'm working on a little garden in front of my camper and while it isn't a fancy showy garden it somehow brings me a sense of peace in learning how to take care of my flowers and watching them bloom. :flower:

Maybe we really should read less news about Donald: The Orange Menace, and plant more trees and flowers? :chin:

He sorta did. He illegally tried to stop Parliament from sitting so they wouldn’t pass laws he didn’t like.

I’m glad the Supreme Court justices voted unanimously to declare this move illegal.

We're still talking about Trump because his cult is still alive and well, and is questioning the legitimacy of Biden's election. That, and how Trump and his cronies can't seem to avoid the scrutiny of the law, whether it's a matter of his involvement in the January 6 insurrection, his theft of classified materials, as well as state investigations into his shady financial dealings. Don't want us to keep talking about Trump? Then he should keep his mouth shut and his head down instead of attracting media attention.
