What do you guys think about it?

I heard there was a psychological study which showed that most people who are in second life, apparently just tend to be themselves as they would do in "real life" which is very interesting cos you would think ppl would like to create a different personality and do things you dont do in real life.
So if you are a shy/introverted person, in second life, it would still show!, according to this survey..
I just wondered if any of you is a second life "resident" and if so, tell us what you think about it, if you feel you can be someone else and you feel you have less socializing problems than in real life or just about the same?

Sorry I probably should´ve posted it under some other forum..

I'm in SL and while I think a lot of people are themselves, I also think they may emphasize are a particular aspect of themselves more. I'm usually very introverted, but on SL it's easier for me to go up to people. Depending on the avatar I'm wearing at the time I'll also usually act a little differently. There's an entirely unofficial group called immersionists who see SL as much more like an open-ended game. For them they may in some ways act differently from RL, for example they may suspend some of the ethical values that they usually have. I wrote two blog entries once about my own ideas regarding the relationship between avatars and the people behind them:

http://hechadashyitkadesh.blogspot.com/ ... atars.html
http://hechadashyitkadesh.blogspot.com/ ... l-you.html

I really see SL as a way we can actively explore parts of ourselves that are usually beneath the surface.

One of the things I enjoy about SL is the sense of freedom. I can go wherever I want, do whatever I want, and I'm only limited by my skill with the program and the program's limitations.

There are some specific places where RP's have formed. Some of them are original and others are based on works of fiction e.g. Dune, ST, SG and FFVII. When I was writing the literature for the Dune Project I met a person who refuses to ever be OOC. There's another person I know who won't identify himself with his avatar and sometimes refers to himself as "my human."

It would be interesting to go in there and just be yourself... or do or say something really crazy that you've wanted to do or say but were too scared or embarrassed to do. But then, lots of people do that as a practical joke, and the other people might just think that your computer is malfunctioning or your 2-year-old is playing with it because you forgot to log off, or that you're just very out of practise moving around in it... I've never been in Second Life so I don't know what it's like. I think having a real life is WAY better. :P

Hiya!, thx both of you for answering my thread, i agree with Malachi_Rothschild in the fact that people may emphasize a particular aspect of themselves more. Very interesting post and blogs too.
Ana54, I agree with you that having a Real Life is better!, lol , but you can have a go in this SL game, its fun and you can even learn as there are online courses at universities and all, its interesting.

Yes.

Seriously, is "second life" a phrase people like us use quite often?

Mmmm...I really dont know if you are having a laugh at it or that you dont have a clue what second life is? :?:

In case you´re not kidding, it´s (game..well more than that really..) : a virtual 3D world where you can sort of "lead a second life" since you can interact with "residents" from all over the world, socialize (can even have virtual sex?!?!, bit scary..), buy, sell, create, have your own island, work, etc, however you could use it properly as an educational tool for instance, going to uni classes or courses....:

"Second Life has recently emerged as one of the cutting-edge virtual classrooms for major colleges and universities, including the Open University (UK), Harvard, Vassar, Pepperdine, Drexel, Rice, University College Dublin, Elon University, Ohio University, Ball State, New York University, University of Houston, Australian Film Television and Radio School, Stanford University, Delft University of Technology, AFEKA Tel-Aviv Academic College of Engineering,Barcelona University and Madrid Complutense University..."

Most major banks, politicians (using it as a campaign oportunity), writers and famous people are in SL since they´ve realized its a huge source of publicity for all of them, businesses that advertise or set up shops on Second Life have the economic goal of making Real Profit out of it in Real life...its scary really and some people can get mixed up with this Second Life and the Real one..thats the main problem about it..we´ll see all the consequences of it in the near future i guess...
It can be entertainment but it can be dangerous too for some people, psychologically speaking..

However I find it interesting from a psychological point of view to see how people will act in this SL playing the same role as in Real Life in general..

You better have a look at it and find out it yourself if you wish to.:

I joined today (my father suggested it last night, and I said I would; so I did). I'm entirely lost, but that's probably just as well. I don't play well with others. :P

Its absolutely normal you get lost when you start playing it, i had same problem as you, but when you see other residents around you, just use the chat thing and ask for help, just say im new in here, can anyone help me?, its very likely that someone will, there are lots of residents eager to help, there are even some who get paid by doing so...
Thats how I got started and learnt about it, only played 4 times now, but learned most of how it works on my first day by asking a helpful resident who showed me and teleport me all around, .

Good luck,

I play second life for two reasons:

1. I'm in a very long distance relationship, and sometimes my partner and I miss doing 'normal' things like walking together or swimming or playing a game.

2. I have DID and it's a chance for some of my wilder alters to get things out of their system in a safer environment... i.e. my prostitute/stripper alters are free to make money in the game that way, my child alters are free to run around the pet store and hyperventilate and put on huge ruffly pink dresses, etc.

I like it. It helps with dealing with real life sometimes. And less crazy and demanding than the sims...

I own a private island in second life. I developed it and make a land covenant stating the terms of living there. It appeals to artists and others that like a tranquil existance. Its an island of giant tree houses in 50 meter tall trees. It is so private, it cannot be found even with the in world search tools. Invite only. I wont name it here.. you would have to private message me here at WP if you wanted to see it. I'll get a picture though.

Here it is.
Image

In second life, I look as much like me as I can, to the point of having a custom skin created from a photo of myself. In my profile I have RL photo of myself to prove it. I find most use SL to eliminate their flaws and perceived shortcomings.. an idealized self. Others go for all out bizzare.

Currently I am working on a legacy project so i am looking to aquire some old accounts. SL is free to play, but i am willing to pay probably 5 bucks for ones that I use. It would involve permanent ownership by me though.
