Yes, sports are great.

Not all autistic men seem to like sports but they don’t have to be team sports. Go swimming or kayaking. Jog, even if it’s at home on a treadmill. Get some cross-country skiis or a jump rope. Play basketball on your driveway.

There’s lots of domestic work people can do for exercise too: cutting grass, gardening, raking leaves, shovelling snow, vacuuming the house, washing floors, painting walls, going up and down stairs with laundry, carrying children, carrying groceries home from the store. Standing up to cook instead of takeaway. Scrubbing the shower. Walking around the grocer or going to a farmers market. Getting up on a ladder to clean your eaves.

It’s all good. It all saves money and accomplishes a job getting done. Partners like that too

And yes, going to gym does help, so...stop trying to promote the idea that it doesn't. A healthy lifestyle/body is certainly more attractive than one isn't.

Even better: find a sport/physical activity you genuinely enjoy and do it :D
Works for both appearance and personality 8)

Weight lifting, body weight exercies, doing treadmills/bikes, fitness classes and aerobics are all sports too.

For the record, in real life, most married men are boring who do none of those sports or adventures you're talking about. At least, not as a daily or even weekly activity.

My husband learned most of his bike tricks in his 30s.
I started climbing after being married and having kids.
Our friend went back to climbing after his son grew up and moved out.
It's never too late to have some fun :D

Good point.

I hope it didn't sound like I'm unsympathetic.

It's just that some men on here laugh when I say "personality" or "sense of humour".

These are often the same men who lack both, but insist that going to the gym will help.

No, you don't come across as unsympathetic at all. I understand where you're coming from.

It's really sad that social disabilities and outdated gender roles are so restricting to the dating prospects of some of us who are decent people.

Hugs.
I agree.

Dating requires all the skills we find most difficult.

In terms of establishing that connection, absolutely.

I feel like I'd be so much better at maintaining a relationship than establishing one, assuming of course that my partner was also invested in maintaining it. It's really sad that finding a woman who's interested in dating me has to be so hard. It makes me feel like I lack worth as a heterosexual man.

WP was founded in 2004; I did my marathons from 1995-1997.

RE sports: perhaps the reason so many Autistics avoid them (both team and individual) is that we tend to have deficits in both gross and fine motor coordination to varying degrees.

I personally enjoy hiking and swimming more than sports and going to the gym.

I went to the gym constantly during 1994 and 1995 (sometimes 4 hours a day). I did not notice a greater interest exhibited in me by women. In fact, women tend to be more interested in me when I'm a little chubby.

Hiking and swimming are great!
Who says only noisy competitions count as sports?

I wish there were more swimming pools in my area......

I like to WATCH team sports like baseball, basketball, etc. But I'm a little too old to play them, with the possible exception of softball.

My daughter in law is a doctoral student but also does competitive rock climbing and teaches it.

My son was a snowboard instructor and competitive skateboarder. He’d still be doing it but he wrecked his leg. Now he sails yachts in AUS.

My partner still plays hockey, minus the training regime.

I was into extreme mountain biking all over the continent when I worked full time and raised the kids by myself.

Where there’s a will.
