I agree.

Just like jazz, opera’s origins are humble, certainly not “highbrow.”

When people would harass me about opera and why I would watch it, I would respond with the question “have you ever seen the film comedy Sex, Lies and Videotape?” If they respond in the affirmative, I respond “Exactly!”

Most opera plots are exactly that: Sex, Lies, and Drama. That will usually shut people bullying me about opera up.

In addition, I include Broadway, Operetta, and London’s West End musicals as opera.
