smiling can be part of "appeasement" behavior and meant to show friendly intent (please don't get mad at me or hurt me) some of us learned appeasement behavior very early in life for our own safety. It is difficult to change, but it can be done with practice, over time.

Don't really have a lot of facial expressions.

Trained myself not to respond outwardly to things. When I was child I always made the wrong facial expression and that seemed.to cause not so great.reactions. Like if I was being bullied and I responded in any way it would get worse.

I've been told it's also wrong to not make an expression. Can't win.

I smile when gruesome or sad things happen in TV shows or movies. Also when people get hurt in real life. I don't necessarily think it's funny, but it's my odd way of coping with things like that.
