The Roman Catholic Church is launching an investigation after two nuns returned from a missionary trip pregnant, breaching the strict rules of chastity.

The women, who were from different orders in Sicily, became pregnant while on separate charity assignments in Africa.

According to media reports, one of the women was a mother superior, who was working at an institute that helps "fallen women and their children." The woman, whose age is not known, discovered that she was several weeks pregnant and has since returned to Madagascar, her home country.

The second woman is believed to be 34 years old and found she was pregnant after being hospitalized because of severe stomach pains. She belonged to a convent in Sicily's Nebrodi mountains but has since moved to Palermo to prepare for childbirth.

A church source told Italian news agency ANSA: "There is consternation at this news. It appears that both women were back in their home nations and obviously had some form of sexual encounter."

"They both breached strict rules of chastity but the welfare of their children is uppermost," they added.

"The most likely outcome if they will leave their religious service."

There have been previous instances in the Church of nuns becoming pregnant, but in some cases, this was not after consensual sex.

In February this year, the women's magazine of the Church's newspaper L'Osservatore Romano, reported on several cases of sexual abuse on nuns by clergymen. Several children had also been conceived, and some religious sisters had been forced to have abortions.

Pope Francis ended up confirming the accusations were correct: "It is true. There are priests and bishops that have done that."

I suppose that the investigators wouldn't discount the possibility that the nuns are still virgins.

^ It’s hard to say since neither nun has spoken out. It wouldn’t surprise me, though, based on some of the details. There tends to be a large number of creeps in sexually repressive, patriarchal, religious communities.

Do sexually assaulted nuns get kicked out of the order/convent/whatever you call it?

Been going on since this religious cult behaviour stuff began. An older (70-75) Sicilian man I know said there are bodies of babies buried beneath churches in tunnels and tombs all over the place in Italy & at the Vatican because priests have been knocking up nuns forever. It's just a part of the reality of things that the church will never fully admit to.

No, I’m not sure, because I’m part of “we”.

Chances are they didn’t get knocked up by Andy and Steve at the corner pub, though. Whoever it was (or plural) knew they were nuns and seems to get off scott free, with the onus on nuns breaking their vows. Chances are they won’t even tell who it was.

For a nun to consent to sex is one thing but to consent without protection is extremely odd. It seems unplanned which suggests assault, imo.

Just think how many others have sex without pregnancy or birth, so no one ever knows.

You don't think it would be realistic for someone who's not had sex in ages, who travels to a far off land on a vacation/work trip, to be horny enough to consent to unprotected sex? :? Especially someone from a religion that has sects that don't believe in birth control and do believe in claiming that whatever happens is God's will? :?

Interesting.

While sexual assault is possible, consensual sex is probable. IMO.

My point is that if they wanted sex, they would know the dire consequences and they would have wanted to use protection. You'd think so, anyway.

Regardless of whether it was assault or not, I want to know why the story is about the nuns falling pregnant (e.g., having sex), when it doesn't seem to be about the men who contributed. Chances are they also had a vow of celibacy, but somehow it's only the women who are being shamed for it.

Probably because the nuns are the only known partners to these pregnancies ? It's obvious that they're pregnant.. it's virtually impossible to identify the males that boned them. So, it makes sense that the article is about pregnant nuns (who would otherwise just be pregnant women and a non-story, but they took celibacy vows so it's newsworthy.) vs. random guys who claim they bedded nuns as there would be no proof of their stories.. unlike pregnant bellies that tell the tale whether they want it told or not.

How would you biologically expect the story to be any differently reported? :?
