Psst...Double Retired had his tongue firmly in his cheek. I think Shatner was right that an alien civilization would be unlikely to make the tremendous effort of visiting Earth but then not show themselves. Either they would choose to interact or they would consider us such a low life-form that we were not worth interacting with or hiding from.
Though unlikely, a Prime Directive cannot be absolutely ruled out, however. And dragging Capt. Kirk into the conversation was more than I could resist.

I'll go a little further, however. Until a visit is proven to have happened, I will consider them astronomically unlikely. I think a rarity of advanced civilizations in the Universe combined with the literally astronomical distances involved mean we might never get a visit from another civilization. Especially if self-destruction is common with advanced civilizations (so far we only have a sample size of one, but that one sample ain't looking good.)

And I hope the Universe proves me wrong. Even clear proof another "advanced" civilization ever existed elsewhere would be wonderful!

Yes. In the "great american sci fi novel" in my head that I am composing...the saucer jockeys are like Jane Goodall, and we are like the chimps of the Gombe Stream game preserve. Except that we are chimps with nukes. The alien park rangers have ...done a great job so far...keeping us from destroying ourselves during the decades of the cold war. But now...things are getting so tense between the superpowers at flash points like Taiwan and Ukraine that it makes you wonder if ...even the aliens can hold us back from global self-annihilation.
