It looks like your client program is adding slashes.

Why do you say that? Java runs with the VM so as long as it is installed correctly it should work fine in Firefox.

Hmm, the problem may be more to do with bad coding on the website's interface then.
A couple of sites i go to are terrible, the java applets just freeze and firefox crashes ( also have to turn the firewall off at one site else the applet does not get inited. ) Will start using IE for that site.
I may have a bit of a problem at my end too, might try reinstalling things when i can be bothered.

Yep it sounds like your security program is doing its thing. On the whole I would avoid applets unless, you really need to use them, they are old and often cumbersome. What do you use them for chat/irc? You could install a standalone irc client it would make it easier to use. I can't stand chat or p2p other then when I'm only talking to one person at a time. It does my head in otherwise.

For other things flash and AJAX are used more than applets nowadays. Flash only has only one known vulnerability, as far as I’m aware. That doesn’t affect people using a browser, but those who download and use the standalone flash player. Not to be confused with shockwave.

You are better off tweaking things than using IE. I know it may well work, but it is lax because they don't care about security issues until they are a major problem.
