I chose the Daily Mail for the relevant news article, as some of the others I prefer are behind a pay wall.

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3682134/Britain-s-population-overtake-FRANCE-decade-migrants-looking-start-families-flock-UK.html

Considering the UK is relatively small geographically, this is quite impressive. Or not so impressive depending on the way one perceives these things.

Immigration to the UK is partly driving the rapid growth of the UK's population.

Theyve been roughly equal in population for more than a century (even though France is physically bigger)...so either nosing ahead of the other is not earthshaking.

India overtaking China for the title of most populous nation on the planet is more newsworthy.

I think it is the length of time that Britain has been slightly behind in terms of population that makes it newsworthy.

But fair do's, everyone is entitled to their own opinion. :P

Ahem! Don't believe anything the Daily Mail says, or at least take it with a very large pinch of salt. There is a reason their articles are not behind a pay wall.

I think the essence of the story is true - other tabloids have ran the story.

I suppose a lot of people don't enjoy the Daily Mail's social commentary, which I can understand.

Yes. Tabloids. Which are all run by the same people (i.e. millionaires like Rupert Murdoch), that's why they are all saying the same thing.

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) is the organisation to believe about population figures, they are objective.

So I got curious and found their reference page. Now if they say that our population is to overtake France's population within a decade, I'll believe them.
