I'm not sure what to say to you really, the show has been made by a New Zealand crew and cast, they chose the title. You'd have to ask them what they meant.

As I said, it's the story of the 18th century pirate Blackbeard, who you must have heard of? And the Gentleman Pirate, Stede Bonnet.

It's basically a groundbreaking series for LGBTQ+ people because after decades and decades of shows teasing them with 'do these guys fancy each other or not? Oh no, they're just good friends' it turns out THESE guys do fancy each other and they aren't just good friends.

Plus of course being funny and violent at the same time and based on a true story.

You are welcome Jakki! It is on HBO Max, or whatever they are called now. I did explain about 3 times on this thread what the show was about.

It is good, and although based on a true story, it's very fictionalised. And some very appealing characters and scenes. Stede and Blackbeard, particularly, are fantastic.

Another excessively frenetic pirate movie?

Not really. It is a series. Funny and sometimes sad. A well to do gentleman fancies being a pirate.

I'm basing that on fuzzy memory. KitLily may have a better description, or look it up on IMDB or Wikipedia.

Exactly. It started as HBO Now (I think?), and then became HBO Max, and now is called just Max.

It is more than a slapstick comedy, it has a lot to say about life and love, and what it actually means to be a man, too.

The intriguing thing is, it is genuinely based on truth. Blackbeard the pirate did meet the gentleman Stede Bonnet and they did sail together for many months, and no one really knows why they did.

I remember when my son told me about the show, I'd just listened to at least some podcasts about him. Blackbeard is played by Taika Waititi, and my son and I are both fans. I cannot remember which podcasts they were. Possibly Stuff You Should Know. I'm not 100% certain about that. The second season of Aaron Mahnke's Grim & Mild Presents was about Pirates. This American Life had a story about Stede Bonnet as well. I remember hearing that a loooong time ago.

And I knew KitLily could describe it better then me. I should watch season 1 again. Thank you.

It was very good.

(I'll shut up now)

You are far too kind :)

You'd probably be interested in two new books:

Blackbeard Reconsidered: Mist's Piracy, Thache's Genealogy by Baylus Brooks
this is a very slim book but the author has almost certainly discovered who the real Blackbeard was.

The Life and Tryals of the Gentleman Pirate, Major Stede Bonnet by Jeremy R. Moss
This is a biography of Stede Bonnet, very interesting.
(I haven't finished this yet)

What intrigues me is, obviously Blackbeard is very, very famous. Even though he was only a pirate for about 3 years.
He spent a lot of time with Stede Bonnet, so why isn't Bonnet equally as famous?

Who else has watched the whole season now? What an ending that was. Feel like I've been punched in the gut now.
