This presumes they are replicas of 'greys' to begin with.
It seems unlikely that a society around 1000 years ago was familiar with a fictional race invented in the 1890s, which makes it very unlikely that that society was making fan-art of said fictional race.
It's like finding a neolithic dildo and insisting it must be the Buck Rogers spaceship instead of looking for a more mundane explanation (dildo, pestle, probably not a toy rocket ship considering the society had never conceived of rocketry).
