What the difference between update & upgrade? My iPad was updated, but it need to be upgraded to iPadOS 17, my Lookout virus program said it was outdated.

My Guess:

Update is related to the Software that runs the the device like with the iPad it is the iOS operating system, but as the device gets older there will be updates that it will not get like new Operating systems

Upgrade is relating for the hardware and requires a new device to get the newer OS, Depending on what model of iPad you have.

If your iPad is working correctly, then leave it alone. You can only upgrade it to the new version of iOS (17) if your iPad supports it. If it doesn't there is nothing wrong with leaving it as it is now.
