If life's not a competition, why some treat it that way ?
I have heard a number of times, people saying that life is not a competition but I still seem to think that some people still treat life as such, like for example, someone young boasting about being a wealthy business man with lots of money and by the time they are older or also for example to try to achieve lots of great things by the age of 33 like Alexander the Great did at the same age. But I know having read history that Alexander the Great was not ''so great'' in real life.
I still seem to think I see that in some people now especially even on some TV shows like the UK's Apprentice where young professional business men and women in their 20s and 30s (some of which have been older) try to become Alan Sugar's new business partner and some boast about already owning several businesses and seem like they are at their peak already. Even some ''ordinary'' people who are for example, is 24 and talks about how they are a successful business person with a lot of stuff and so on. All that just makes me feel like I am an ''underachiever'' because I didn't choose to go into the world of business despite doing some business studies and that I am ''inferior'' to those people because I just work for a company and other people and not self employed like they are and not the boss or leader of my own business.
I try to avoid comparing myself to other people. Just because someone is successful doesn't mean that they are worthy of respect. I've known some very poor people who were probably worth more than most highly successful individuals. That's not to say that there aren't highly successful people who are great, but it's not the money or success that makes them so.
As far as the question in the title goes, I think some people are naturally ambitious and want to achieve as much success and, sometimes, acclaim as possible. That's how some might measure their self-worth. There's a lot of variety in terms of outlook and the paths one can choose to take in life. As long as someone is not harming others and tries to help fellow humans even in very small ways, I think every individual journey is just as valid.
