I've always hated pointless gendering of thing, and just today I found out that some people seem to consider sandals to be only for women. Case in point: the term "mandals".

I am totally flabbergasted by this. Since when were sandals only for women? I wear sandals all the time during the warmer weather and I've never seen one person, male or female, question it or make fun of it. Men have worn sandals for over 5000 years. Roman men wore sandals and they were considered pretty masculine. I've never heard the term "mandals" until today. I would love to know who came up with the idea that sandals were only women's footwear.

Anyone else hate pointless gendering?

Sandals are unisex.

Mandals is a ridiculous term and notion.

If have never heard that sandals are for women or that men shouldn't wear sandals. All I have heard is that people shouldn't wear socks with sandals.

I don't understand that either. I wear sandals all the time, with my socks.

That is a silly idea. Of course men wear sandals. There are certainly many styles that are marketed only to women and other styles that a marketed to both genders.

That's a load of rubbish, footwear such as sandles are made for both genders

Although if I may theorise, I would theorise that woman generally pay more attention to their foots appearance than men. While some men may have nice feet. Others such as me have feet so unkept that it may revolt anyone looking down.

Like just look at the ancients, in some areas sandals were what everyone wore...for sure sandals do not have a gender. That said Tevo sandals for instance are very good for hiking and walking and they last very long and so they are more functional sandals. Whears there are also fancy glam sandles with heels which seem more marketed towards woman, but overall sandals are nice in the summer for any gender as your feet will stay cooler in sandals than in closed shoes.

I hate the flip flop style though as I hate having s**t between my toes, but that is why I have my tevos, nice open toe sandals.

Pretty sure GZA uses 'effeminine like sandals' on Liquid Swords. That album and song dropped in 1995.

Not that it matters, you don't have to follow someone else's cultural norms.

I'm planning on buying myself some sandals to wear with my socks next week just so my feet can have that summer feeling.

It seems like a lot of white hetero guys and their masculinity are more easily threatened than ever now. Calling them mandals when both men and women wear sandals is ridiculous.

It was once common for men to be walking around wearing wigs and high heels. High heels were seen as masculine. I just see them as a recipe for twisted ankles and varicose veins.

Pink was a men's colour because it's a variant of red / blood / war / battle.

Blue was feminine because of heaven and the pretty sky with angels in it.

I've never heard that men can't wear sandals.

That's just stupid.

I've heard that before too. The only other thing I've heard is that sandals should only be worn while at home & gender was not specified. My family always calls them flip-flops thou.
