Almond milk in coffee destroying planet

The massive increase in popularity of almond milk as a dairy alternative has pushed almond prices and production across the world.

However growing almonds is damaging to the environment, specifically because it' is one of the most thirstiest food crops in the world.



The drain on irrigation water is one of the contributing factors to water shortages (Australia is one of the driest continents in the world).

With GMO modified soya bean based milk already identified as being environmentally unfriendly, the increased consumption of almond based milk has also been identified as a problem. Reducing our reliance on carbon polluting cows is going to be much harder now.

I don't think cows are all that bad to begin with really.

I know the alternative milk industry has been pushing their environmental credentials but GMO Soy and now almonds have turned out to be equally destructive. Soybean is responsible for deforestation and greenhouse gases anyway but also Monsanto might have caused the release of genetically modified plants into the environment.

Now almonds are also causing water shortages. Freshwater supplies around the world are drying up as waterways become excessively polluted.

The main reason for the existence of almond milk, as I understand it, is as a milk substitute for lactose intolerant folks.

I guess that the lactose intolerant should stop aping others and just ...stop putting fake milk on their cereal in the morning, and just do without.

I drink soya milk instead of cow's milk because of the taste and no other reason.

Cow's milk is highly icky for me, unless it is an ingredient masked by other ingredients.

But having it straight? Yikes.

I've never had almond milk and I don't like oat milk.
They're both really unhealthy anyway.
They're usually full of sugar and preservatives.

^^^ I put my daughter on organic almond milk (because she has dairy allergies) but she also has severe allergies to preservatives. She has never had an adverse reaction to the organic almond milk she takes.

That's good. ^ My daughter uses organic oat milk.
It doesn't appeal to me at all.
I'm lactose intolerant but I still use regular cow's milk.

I don't drink cows milk but I'm partial to full cream coffee icecream and Baskin/Robbins mint choc chip

I use oat milk without the extra sugar and additives.

Doesn't really matter at this point. Coffee, Chocolate and Vanilla are all going extinct due to climate change...enjoy what you like while you can.
