I am the same way,
Some streets I have learned because I go there a lot.
I think I would have not survived in the pre google maps era.

I can learn directions, but I have to more or less make it a special interest before I can fathom it. People would probably think I was very strange if they saw all the research I do and the information I carry about with me to get from A to B if it's a new place. I can get lost very easily.

I became pretty familiar with the local street names in my home town, but when I moved to a new town (when I was 34) I had a lot more trouble learning how to navigate around. I used to be much more interested in the layouts of the streets etc. when I was young, and I think I found it more difficult later because as an older person I just couldn't find the same enthusiasm for the subject. Many names for things just bounce off me these days. It seems to be something to do with having done all that stuff once, so that doing it all over again with different data gets too boring for me to focus on it properly.

I'm not great at remembering the names of streets, but I love maps. I love to study maps and I can pretty well visualize where I am and where to go if I have seen a map of the area I am in. I rely on Google maps nowadays but I actually love folding paper maps where you can see a large area all at once.

On the other hand, if I have not seen a map and have to rely on someone telling me where to turn and so forth I find that much more stressful.

I do have a good sense of direction.
I can deliberately get lost and wander, and then get myself un-lost from that.

I suck at recalling the names and describing said directions verbally.
If I tried hard enough however... Maybe.

You'd find it easy here in the Philippines.

No street signs.

No displayed house numbers.

Plenty of landmarks.

The directions are usually said by landmarks.

The stereotype here is that that's how men say directions.
It's women who tells directions by the street names and house numbers.

And men are the majority of drivers around the road -- tricycle, jeepneys, delivery men...
They do prefer knowing the location by landmarks, google maps be damned because it's several months outdated.

I love maps but have no sense of direction in real life. It's kinda stupid as I have a degree in geography.

Do you guys get lost, too in a video game without maps? I can't remember places in video games either.

I still have to look at my hands with that L-shape to know left from right. Yeah, I'm pretty bad at directions.

The L shape doesn't help me - I'm Dyslexic and both L's look the same :-)

I go by landmarks as well. I'm not too good with directions. I panic on the inside every time a taxi driver asks me for directions.
