I don't use social media, other than Mastodon.

WP and other autism forums have become important to me.

I post because I'm bored.

And I'm bored for a good portion of my time.

I recently came back but I’m a different woman than I was when I first started posting. I move into my apartment this week. I don’t see a lot of members I met in my teens and early 20s. That being said, I see less people here than I did in 2010. Social media support Facebook groups are more popular now.

I think that this is a well established fact, that has been discussed on the forum already.

I think it is a shame personally, but it is what it is.

It is a shame because there are things that I would rather talk about here that I can’t talk about on social media. On Facebook, I risk people I know in real life seeing it and knowing that it’s me. I prefer to keep some of my rants and raves anonymous.

I know what you mean. Facebook is a privacy minefield. Even with ones privacy settings ramped up to the max, you still are prodded to share everything with 'friends' for an easy user experience, most of who aren't actual friends.

There is a way to share things with certain people on Facebook, excluding some people, even friends, but it isn't easy or intuitive to do so.

Yes! Why would I talk about personal things online using my real name, and where people I know might see it. Why does anyone?

I'd also note that while it's true there are many other resources/options, the introduce yourself thread seems to be pretty healthy. People are still looking and finding this place, but it seems that they rarely stay very long.

Perhaps that's just the nature of these things, I don't know. I hope it's not something we're doing that makes people feel they don't want to stay or can't get involved in threads elsewhere.

Hmmm I wonder how we could test that theory :chin:

I think (I hope) that some new folk on WP just learned that they or someone important to them is or might be on the Autism Spectrum and don't know how bad that is or what to do next. And then they find WP.

Here they learn that they are not the only ones, there are actually a lot of people on the Spectrum. That some people do quite well on the Spectrum. That there are online tests (e.g., AQ). And they can find out how other people on the Spectrum have handled some common issues.

That is, I'm hoping they find reassurance here that it isn't the end of the world.

And, I suppose, once they've been reassured they leave WP because it turns out there isn't a crisis to resolve.

And in that scenario I think WP has served a purpose even if they choose not to stay.
