Hi all,

Well I never thought I'd be here on a site for autism and other spectrum disorders. I started researching autism because of strong concerns for my husbands reaction to sensory stimuli (touch, smell, taste), low frustration tolerance, daily meltdowns, narrow interests and struggling to reciprocate conversations.

We've been together 15 years, and as he is getting older he is becoming increasingly intolerable of daily interaction such as close physical proximity, interruptions, and bids to connect. I am trying to not take things so personally, but it is still very hard to experience these reactions.

After doing more research on ASD, I also noted I share quite a few traits of women who have HFA and am also seeking guidance from a professional. Some of my strange behaviors over the years align with HFA but I know I'm not Dr. Google..

So, maybe I'll see you around these parts, or drop me a line.

So one of the reasons why you came to this place was because of your husband. So what can I pass onto you.

First, the traits between males and females can be very different.

Stress can have a profound effect. So it is important to learn how to deal with stress effectively.

In my humble opinion, there are two tools to learn, maybe more.

The first is exercise. I found that getting at least 30 minutes of strenuous exercise each day will help dramatically.
The second is sleep. But not just the time he sleeps but the intensity of his sleep. He needs to get at least 2 hours of deep NREM and REM sleep each night, to recover for the next day.

Sensory stimuli (touch, smell, taste) is interesting. It can be a problem. This is a common trait for us. Our sensory perception is much stronger in us. It can be a curse. But it can also be a blessing. If you can learn to use your unique sensory differences effectively, they can become a gift.

Struggling to reciprocate conversations. Yes that can be a trait. I speak very few words. But the few words that I speak are direct and to the point.

It is possible that the stress your husband is experiencing is not coming from home. People often live in two different worlds. One is home life and one is work life. Many people in a work environment are cruel and mean. In a sense it is possible that he is being bullied by the mob at work. If so, stand behind him and help him deal with the bullies.

I was 64 before I even considered that I might be Autistic, and I got my formal diagnosis before I was 65. It was the online AQ test that convinced me that I might really be Autistic, that it wasn't all in my imagination.

My bride, on the other hand, is ADHD. Personally, I'd rather be Autistic. (But whatever flavor of Autism I have!)
