Hi everyone, I am 63 years old and was finally diagnosed about ten years ago with Autism and ADHD. Growing up was super tough on me, my family was rejecting and abusive, kids with issues back then were the scapegoats of the family. My relationship with my family just got worse and eventually I stopped talking to them. Life has been hard, I have no family except what I married into. I have lost trust in all human relationships so I came here to find out if anyone else has experienced similar.

Welcome back to Wrong Planet. You have been visiting here since 02 April 2016. Somewhere in one of you post you indicated that you were an Aspie (Someone with Asperger's Syndrome). So you are like ME.

So first things first - you are not broken. You are just different. You have special skills that other people do not possess. You need to understand what those skills are and how to effectively use them. Use your strengths to overcome your weaknesses.

The first time you entered the site, you wrote:

What is your first name? Laura
Age: 55 years young
Location: Virginia, near Lynchburg
Hobbies and Interests: kids with disabilities, dogs, reading, museums, small towns, nature, naps, eating well as close to natural as possible
Why are you here? Wanted a one-stop shop for Aspergers, my diagnosis, with a sense of humor
When were you diagnosed?(skip if you don't have a disorder): Long time ago
Favorite subjects: math
Year/Grade: not in school, got my masters in 2009 though
Favorite music: classical, some blues, Smithereens
Books: sci fi, horror (minimum blood though), math books
TV shows/Movies: Walking Dead, Fear of the Walking Dead, dystopia, apocalypse
Instrument: tried and died
Do you like sports? Football
Family: husband and four dogs
Clothing: classic work clothes, conservative
How did you find this website? websurfing
Job: Special Education teacher
Plans for the future? learning how to navigate through my disability, have been in denial for a long time

So as I said earlier ----

We have some things sort of in common. I'm 69. In 2019 I was diagnosed Autism Spectrum Disorder, Level 1 (Mild), with a note that I also satisfied the criteria previously associated with Asperger's Syndrome. I am not, however, ADHD—but my bride is (and not mild!).

We have no children and my bride's extended family is minuscule so, for most purposes, our extended family consists of my siblings and their descendants. I get a long with them OK even though we have very little in common...but, predictably, my bride is usually the point of contact between them and us.

Parts of my life were difficult but I'm stubborn and persisted. Life has been pretty good since I retired, however. And I am, by inclination, a recluse.

And I like WP! You, on the other hand (and as noted by jimmy m), joined WP quite some time ago, were briefly active, and then left. I'm glad you're back and I hope this time you stay but I'm curious: Did something happen to you that motivated you to come back?

hi and welcome, I was diagnosed at age 68, Autism answered almost all of my "whys" regarding past and even recent history. Suddenly things made some sense! It was such a relief to find out that all those painful years everything was not, after all, "all my fault" but that I had neurological struggles and nobody knew!
I am still sorting it out about 4 years later, so many years of autism and negative history to understand. Glad you found us, you are among folks who will understand!
