Well I want to work very much to get off SSI but no one will hire, how about people want to work but no one wants to hire people who could maybe bring a skill or two. Bullcrap no one wants to to work, more like companies pretend to hire but don't actively follow up so tons of people who want to work can't find a job. Cause a lot of places are just hiring year around, though half the time they never hire anyone. Like the local walmart can't keep all the self check out lanes open with juust one employee...so seems like they should put one or two more employees on the self check outs but no they just put one so they shut down half the self check outs instead of juust assigning two to three clerks to hang around there. Which if I was the manager that is what i'd do, as to not keep customers waiting so long to check out. But I applied at that walmart and still heard nothing back so like they dont have enough employees to keep all the self check out lanes running but yet they won't hire more people on? like wtf? I have literally tried applying for a job at that walmart 3 times and never hear anything back.

But point is a lot of us want to work, but you have to err hire us for us to work idk. I have just applied to so many things in the past month, just to not get a single email, phone call or text back , and it's not great for morale. LIke what am I supposed to? go to a store and just get on my knees and beg for a job? so maybe I can get one out of pity lol.

It's also corporations not wanting to pay people a living wage.

In many states, the minimum wage is still $7.25/hr, despite other states raising it to $15-20/hr. The CEOs don't want to pay that much, so they will automate those jobs (like with the self-checkouts you mentioned), or lay people off.

It's also why they contract or outsource workers. In every other developed country, CEOs have no problem paying people a living wage, and contributing to the common good. Yet when asked to do so in the US, they're "Arrrggh, socialism!"

I've been trying to get hired for over three months now. Tons and tons and tons of applications sent in. Very few gave me any kind of response at all. Only one was even going to give me an interview (which I didn't even have, because an hour before the interview, they texted me saying someone else was already selected...).

I saw someone post a meme on FB with a fake business sign saying "hiring anyone that will show up". I didn't find it funny. I have a fantastic record of attendance, being on-time, and being a hard worker at any job I get into, and... yet, I still am struggling to find a job. That meme is a fictitious image of the job market, and it's not a funny one. It's completely out of touch. But people who are out of touch don't get it. SMH.

Due to disability, I now have the help of the state government to find a job. Lets hope that it finally happens soon.

This is off-topic but it makes me happy that Walmart theft has increased since they installed the self checkouts.

I think that's been the case with all the stores that installed them. It was an acceptable loss, but they haven't figured out how to cut the theft down, customers hate it and they aren't even being able to avoid having as many cashiers. The store I used to work at would regularly have to pull people from other departments due to not having enough checkers because they were forced to cut back on the checkers due to the stupid self-checkout machines.

In other words, those machines are a lot more expensive than you'd think and there's a real possibility that you can't see things on the shelf because the employee that was supposed to be doing that got called up to check.

It's people wanting to be paid without working.

It's corporations wanting people to work without paying them.

Somewhere in the middle lies the solution; but compromise?  PFEH!  Forget it!  Neither side wants that!

I would be more willing to work if I could find a job where I could afford the 1950's American Dream.I have been looking for a job for close to a decade but the best jobs I can get are McJobs paying 15 dollars per hour and we all know that 15 dollars per hour is a poverty wage in today's America because of inflation.

A big reason why corporations dont like to pay a living wage is likely because they have a responsibility to their shareholders to try to maximize shareholder value and a lower payroll means more money for the buybacks and dividends for the owners of the stock.

I don't know about employers, but I am starting to feel like Recruiters are using AI. I've received several recruits for jobs, and none of them have been anything I have any experience at all in. Got one the other day. I applied and was turned down instantly. I'm like... Why was I even recruited, then? :huh: :wall:

I don't even disclose that I have a disability, because of this.

While it does sound like it would assure would-be candidates that they would be protected from discrimination, recruiters often use back-handed excuses like "they're not a good cultural fit" (which is also used to discriminate against older candidates).

My son has a Master's degree and a decent amount of work experience but has written over 200 tailored cover letters in the past year, only to have two interviews which both bombed. I think they bombed because of his autistic personality although I don't know for sure and I'd never say that to him. The interviews were on Zoom and I could hear the intensity in his voice, and he was really infodumping. He talked wayyyy too much, as far as I could tell.

He had a good job but they recently fired the entire staff cross-country, to be replaced with newbies for cheaper. He can't get unemployment because of several loopholes related to the pay schedule of his former job.

It's extremely hard to find work here unless you want to flip burgers for minimum wage and even then, people who are seeking professional jobs can't put it on their resume so it does nothing to advance their prospects. It would cost more to drive to those jobs than what you'd earn.

We need to become a social democracy so workers can get the healthcare and retirement benefits they deserve, but we can't get half the country to ditch their Cold War-era mentality.

The Nordic countries are not China or the old Soviet Union.

I definitely agree with JamesW's point. Human Resource's goal is to get the best "resource" for the best price and to minimize conflict and legal risk for the company. It's disheartening but a sad truth. Employee satisfaction and happiness only occurs if it is "profitable" to do so. I also like Tim Tex's point about not disclosing disability. I've been doing that and even though legally they are not allowed to discriminate they probably do and just claim another reason for doing so. I would say just keep trying and plugging away during the job search as best you can and best wishes to everyone who's looking right now :)

I would be more than happy to work but I am on social security disability and SSI and I am not allowed to save money or have good emergency fund legally so I have no incentive to work plus I would lose my healthcare coverage from the government and I have roughly 10,000 a month in medical bills so I would have to make close to 200,000 dollars individually as a entry-level worker with no STEM degree to equal my current situation and there's no way I could make 200,000 at a job.I would need to gross about 160,000 a year just to cover medical bills.So I would need to make over 200,000 a year to be in a good of a situation so I have no real financial incentive to work.I would literally die if I lost my medical coverage so thats a big reason why I dont work for a boss.
