Does anyone have an opinion on the Netflix show Extraordinary Attorney Woo? I just watched it for the first time and I definitely have an opinion but I am curious what you guys think of it.

I definitely have an opinion too!

Isn't it great to have opinions?

I guess I will tell you what I think of it. I was hoping to hear the opinions of others before stating my own but I guess, I will go ahead and state mine. I thought the show was cute and entertaining and I actually enjoyed watching it. BUT, it really astounded me how a show could be so cute and fun and so offensive at the same time.

I found Woo Young Woo's character to be a mix of lovely fun and quirky genius sweetness with over exaggerated attempts at stereotypes that I found pretty offensive and even condescending. I also thought that some of the portrayals of the Korean people made them look ridiculous, especially Gurami and Harry and the group of townsfolk in the episode where they wanted to build a road through the village. So I definitely have mixed feelings. Also, in the episode where attorney Woo was representing the young Autistic man who accidentally killed his brother while trying to save him, she makes a very incorrect statement which I wish she had not made. She states that most Autistic people about are like the young man that she was defending. For those of you who have not seen the show, his character was portraying a high support needs Autistic person with a significant intellectual disability (lower IQ). Attorney Woo is wrong when she states that most Autistic people are like him. The actual fact is that about 30% of Autistic people are like him. That is the latest statistic that I am aware of. The majority of Autistic people, as far as my knowledge, are actually lower support needs. But other than that, most of the information that the show tries to teach about Autism itself is accurate enough that it did not bother me.

I also found the language translation left a lot to be desired. The translation did not really work well but at least they tried.

I did find the cinematography to be visually stunning though, especially the scenes which showed the marine life and I loved the décor in her bedroom. So, those are my mixed feelings. I would love to know what other people think of the show. I don't really make it a point to watch a lot of Autistic themed shows but I do enjoy them every now and then especially if they are really well done. So for Extraordinary Attorney Woo, I think I would give it a grade of a C-. It had some great things going on, especially with the stunning visuals but the not so great things were a bit hard to tolerate.

I have never seen the show because I have never subscribed to Netflix. That said it is a Korean show so not only may there literal issues with lost in translation but is coming out of a different culture where the same words might have a different context.

Yes, the language issue can be expected depending on the film's budget. It is a little awkward which is fine. But I have seen a lot of foreign shows which were translated so beautifully that you could not tell that they were not American or British, so I know that it can be done very well.
