I just read the list of evidence against them. Seems pretty damning but they're pleading not guilty so it'll be interesting to see how this goes.

I missed the judgement last Friday. Guilty. Of course, the evidence seemed overwhelming. I can't understand why they didn't just admit it.

Be interesting to see what the punishment is though. Surely you can't get sent to jail for cutting down a tree?

Yes, it's serious in the UK too. But people aren't typically jailed for cutting down trees, even if they have a preservation order on them. It's usually a fine and you have to replant or something.

So if these guys get jail it'll be because of the high profile of the case, not because of the crime itself.
