Why don't people understand vengeance solves nothing?

I've recently seen videos in which people debate about bringing back the death penalty in the UK. I've sometimes thought "why do they keep bringing this up?" When it will probably never happen in the 55+ years since it was abolished. I don't know how people can be for killing other people who commit such vile and atrocious crimes. I don't know if it's because emotions run really high when it comes to this subject.

I remember watching a programme about hunting nazi war criminals, where in the mid 60s in Uruguay, some mossad agents ambushed and killed a man called Herbert Cukurs, who committed atrocities against Jews in Latvia. It made me think of a quote from Batman's butler Alfred who explains to him when he couldn't save Andrea (who was hunting down the Joker and other murderers of her father) "vengeance blackens the soul Bruce, I always feared you would become that which you fought against."

I'm not sure vengeance is always the goal.

Eliminating war criminals serves to remind other people in positions of power that they don't have impunity and can be held accountable for their actions, even if they can't be detained and imprisoned they can always be eliminated.
