I was 66 or 67 years old when i first mentioned to my therapist that my lifelong disconnect from people made me feel "like i'm autistic". She pretty much affirmed my off-the-cuff statement. Since that day a couple of years ago, I have been watching videos and reading what I can and find that I do have a lot in common with an autistic brain structure. I'm on a waiting list for and evaluation but have self-diagnosed in the meantime.

When I look back at the last 70 years all my memories are now filtered through the lens of the knowledge of my austism/aspergers. Mine is complicated by severe ADHD Inattentive (diagnosed 25 years ago).

I've had many limitations imposed by my brain structure, but I wouldn't trade with anyone. I like thinking differently. It does get lonely at times, but I'm finding that lonely authenticity is better than the alternatives.

Well...you realized it younger than I did. I was a mere 64 when I got my diagnosis.

And the self-knowledge I gained was wonderful. So much finally made sense.

Welcome to the Autism Spectrum!

"Memories filtered through the lens of the knowledge of AS"...I love how you said that. And come to think, I do the very same thing. Welcome to the club

perach, Welcome to Wrong Planet

You are right that you are different. It stems from brain design. The human brain has two halves. One the exist on the left side of the skull and it becomes our dominant daytime brain. The other half exist on the right side of the brain and it is a support brain, our night time brain. But sometimes an accident occurs and the two sides switch places.

So you are not alone. This happens to varying degrees across many people.
