Strange scenario today, is it just in my head?

I am a very popular person at my school due to my looks and fighting skills but often get a weird scenario.For example today I was walking up to the hall to check the signs on the doors and a group of girls 20 or so metres away started "whispering" quite loudly and as I drew near one of them burst out waving and shouting. I shrugged and didn't think much of it at the time but I came back ten or so minutes later and asked them why they had done that and if they wanted my attention or to tell me something. They acted confused and said that she was just saying hi but I got a very different feeling from it; that's not how I'm used to people saying hi. Whenever someone else had done it they had something to tell me. I have pretty bad social anxiety and it doesn't help that I like one of the girls there so I may have appeared hostile. I want to apologise tomorrow but I've still got an inkling of suspicion that they weren't being very transparent. I want to know what you people think of that and if you had a similar scenario or what came of it.

Throughout my childhood and for years after that I found it hard to read people and their intentions in different scenarios. I'd a tendency to think literally and to accept jokes and tongue in cheek stuff as serious as well as vice versa.

I don't think a formal apology is called for; just act as usual in a friendly way. I think you're pretty fortunate to be popular, as many of us had difficult schooldays. I was only diagnosed in middle age after years of trying to fit in in any given environment such as work or friendships, and so I compensated by running ultra marathons and hiking in remote mountains to appear tough and have something to show.

What specific sort of fighting do you favour most? Jujitsu, karate etc?

When people get to know me and realize that I don't know how to say hello, they stop saying hello to me.
So for me, this discomfort is only temporary.
