The Mortician - David Sconce Documentary on HBO Max
Previously on Ask a Mortician (July 13, 2019)
This is Caitlin Doughty, YouTube creator, author, mortician, advocate for death acceptance.
Not quite six years later, HBO Max gets an idea...
(June 2025)
There is more connecting this topic to Caitlin Doughty then just the topic, David Sconce. The woman in documentary that talks about morticians not bringing home their work (conversion, not literally) is Jolena Grande. She is a professor at Cypress College, where Caitlin graduated from. Caitlin know Jolena. Caitlin is controversial in the dearly departed business. Jolena Grande is more mainstream. They are both not for (aka anti) David Sconce.
I watched a video Caitlin created after watching the first of three episodes. It is not available on YouTube. I am debating if I'll watch this documentary about a man whose crematorium routinely burned 2, 4, 8, 16, 32 bodies at once, leaving the ash of all the departed co-mingling. So ashes of Uncle Leo may also be a sampling of the ashes of several other people. He was caught when the guys he hired for cremating and started a competition of who could cremate the most bodies at once. It think at count 36, a leg got stuck in the flue and the place caught fire.
I am debating if it is worth my time. Is there anything I can learn from this documentary that I'm actually interested it? The first episode was released on June 1. The second will be on June 8. The third will be June 15. I'll watch episode 1 and decide if I'll watch the whole thing.
