Hi I am currently in the process of saving 140 dollars for a Nintendo Switch game I have been wanting for a while but there's a problem:

I get distracted by my other interests like fashion dolls/doll clothes or I spend the money at Day Program or with Cathy!! !! !!

I know I need to show self-restraint with the Barbies and other things so I can put all resources towards this game but HOW?!?

I am terrible with self-restraint!

What should I do?

Thanks in advance!! !

Open a savings account explicitly only for this game (or anything else later down the line you wish to save for).
Regularly pay into it.
DO NOT TOUCH IT. THAT IS THE #1 RULE! :-)

Yes, that is DEFINITELY the solution!! !

Having a savings account ensures that I can save the money for the game and other expensive things without worrying about using up my debit card!

That frees up the debit card for Barbies, pizza, bowling, food etc

Try to make a habit of transferring a small amount every pay date, just a relatively small amount you can afford, and it will add up over time.

Some types of debit card things have an option to round your charges up to the next dollar amount & the difference can be put into something that can be used like a savings. Lots of credit cards earn rewards like cash back or Amazon gift cards that can be saved up & used to treat yourself. The tricky part for lots of people is being responsible with their spending.

Yep, that's the main issue!! !

I tend to get easily-distracted by the next new shiny toy (in this case fashion dolls/Barbies) that it's hard to stay on budget but I am forcing myself to for this!

It will only take 7 weeks to save up enough for this game which isn't really that bad and I can do it if I am disciplined!

I had a thought that a bit of games go on sale around the Christmas season like for black friday. You might could get a good deal if you keep checking the prices on various sites like Amazon, Ebay, the Xbox store ect.

I used to use cash envelopes for this exact purpose. I'd designate a purpose for each envelope as to what I planned to spend that money on, and every time I had extra money I'd put some of it in the envelope, and then I'd make sure to never spend the money in that envelope on anything else.

Personally, I don't have that problem

I moved over to steam and I like it a whole lot more at any time there's multiple multiple games I'm interested in that I can buy for like $3

The fact that new video games are now so absurdly expensive is part of the reason why I've given up on new games and converted to retro games.

For example I can buy myself a Sega Mini, Super Nintendo Mini, or PSOne Mini off Ebay with each console having over 20 games built into the system itself for roughly the same price as one new Xbox Series video game not including DLC.

Even though they're old games getting more games on one purchase feels like a much better deal to me.

You have to prioritize it.

It's the reason why crackheads always got money for crack, because they treat crack as their #1 priority when it comes to spending.
