Postapocalypse and people with ASD
How do you think, your average person with ASD would deal with the life in a postapocalyptic world? I just started to watch the Walking Dead (I have watched so far, the first episode on Netflix) - it inspired me to think about this and ask you this question. Regardless of what the reason for the apocalypse would be - whether it would be a zombie apocalypse (The Last of Us, The Walking Dead), an illness the outbreak of which caused the majority of people to die off (The Stand by King), whatever.
Do you think that an average aspie would be able to deal with living - and surviving - in such a world? In The Stand there is such a socially awkward and generally disliked (but neurotypical) dude, Harold (it's an old name, true but he is actually a young boy of 16) who becomes a very important and influential member of the community that got formed after the superflu outbreak. He's not an aspie to the best of my knowledge (though if King wrote his novel now and not in the 70's, he could have thought about making him a member of the aspie community indeed) but he is socially awkward indeed. Such a school creep. In spite of his bad social skills that (among others) made him an outcast in his high school, he became as I have already said, an important group member; the adults treated him as any other adult man; in the book (and the TV shows based on it) he even gets an adult girlfriend who could be his mother, as she is a lady of 37.
And here comes my questiuon - do you think you would be able to survive in such a world yourself? Do you have any skills that would help you survive? Because I think, unfortunately, that I would be rather like Rita from The Stand who had no survival skills and finally killed herself, unable to adapt in such a world. Even if she had a bf met after the superflu outbreak (who was young enough to be her son, too). Well, I wouldn't kill myself but I indeed would be totally hopeless when it comes to dealing with such a life on my very own, so I would need to find a group where I could rely on other people's help. I don't drive a car, I can't shoot etc.
But I would not need others to break my loneliness because I'm well used to it. Do you have any survival skills? Like can you shoot or do you know much about medicinal herbs and so on?
P.S. And I just thought about this one thing - I'm SURE after such an apocalyptic event destroying the world, everybody would INSTANTLY forget about their minor so called traumas because they would get replaced by REAL traumas (like seeing your beloved family members getting killed by zombies etc.).
