Its quite simple - America is a continent, not an officially recognised country.

Canadians are americans.
Mexicans are americans.
etc.

Even if we accept the national name 'US(of)A' as being of semantic validity (which im not at all sure about), we are still left the problem of what to call its residents. They are americans obviously, but what name is there to distunguish them from all the other americans?

any thoughts?

My thought: America is 2 continents, North and South, and these different continents have such strong differences that they hardly need to be mentioned as a single group as Latin American countries have more in common with each other than they do with America and Canada and vice versa. Because people referring to all people in the Americas is rarely an issue, I don't see a need for Americans to change their name which they have held for a reasonably long period of time. It really isn't much of an issue, just a small matter of working through occasional wording issues.

When my 6th grade Social studies teacher said something similar in response to my answering a question "Americans," I corrected my term to United Statesians - He didn't say anything against that.

but the reason its okay to call USA Americans, and not canadians or Mexicans, is that residents of the USA live in America. United States of America to be exact. Residents of Canada and Mexico do not live in America, They live in North America. they are North Americans, not Americans.

my initial thought is STFU. but that's mainly because i've heard this moronic rambling from other people from the UK. it's just an inferiority complex....if it makes you feel any better...it's not the US that's controlling the UK and, more specifically, england...it's israel.

No. Hawaii, Puerto Rico, the US Virgin Islands and Guam/Marianas are part of the USA, but are not part of the continent of America. And residents of the continental USA live in North America just like Canadians and Mexicans.

You didn't read my argument, or you wouldn't be using that to debate it. :wink: It doesn't matter that Hawaii isn't on the mainland. Hawaii is part of the United States OF AMERICA. That makes Hawaiian's Americans. Unlike Canadians, which can only technically be North Americans,not Americans.

You shouldnt really bundle up all your frustration like that, then randomly discharge insults at different people on completely unrelated topics.

That sort of attitude is guaranteed to provoke hostility ;)

This has been helpful. However, consider the following hypothetical scenario;

Alaska & Canada join together and call themselves the 'United Kingdom of America'. By your logic wouldnt they then become americans? OR would they be disallowed from claiming the 'america' title and instead have to call themselves the 'United Kingdom of North America' (continuing to be called north americans). If so, then why - Is it simply a matter of first come first served?

Ive used Alaska & Canada, but the same question could also be applied to South American countries.
